Black students, educators and staff need the support of the school board in order to succeed. Historically, this community has been undermined, underfunded and discriminated against. In order to repair and restore their trust in our school system we must provide the funding and support needed.

I support the resolution on reparations for Black students. As an educator and Chicano I proudly stand with this resolution. Anti-Black racism is real and institutional racism is real. This resolution puts this reality at the forefront and provides solutions to begin to address this. More Black educators, resources for our Black students are just 2 of the many solutions proposed that I stand with. Please pass this resolution.

We have yet to invest in our Black students, instead we have done the opposite. With this plan Black students, parents, educators, and community members have come together and given us a clear and strong path forward. Please listen and VOTE YES on the Reparations for Black Students Resolution - to repair the harm caused by decades of disinvestment - and to reinvest in Black students, families, schools, and staff in OUSD.

I strongly urge the board to pass the Reparations for Black Students. Our district has a duty to address the opportunity gap permitted by inter-generational education funding deficits in predominantly black schools and black students throughout Oakland. Make the right choice and establish this fund to make Oakland a leader in the country when it comes making OUSD a Black Sanctuary District.

As an OUSD alum, parent and teacher--Oakland has been losing its Black infrastructure for years. We need to find ways to make Black student support part of a clear process across OUSD, rather than the focus of particular programs or areas.
I was part of the organizing meetings that produced this resolution, and it represents the voices of hundreds of Black parents and students in our district. I know it's a big shift, but we need a big shift like this to truly center our Black students.
