I support the Reparations for Black Students as a teacher at West Oakland Middle School. West Oakland is the historically black neighborhood in Oakland with families that have faced racial segregation, trauma, redlining, and much more throughout history and today. I see the effects of these uncontrollable experiences and situations in my students daily and know that they deserve more from Oakland. They deserve more from their schools. They deserve more from OUSD. We must pass this legislation to give them the water needed to grow and thrive in their community and beyond. If OUSD is truly UNITED, we must uplift those that are oppressed and those in power must give up power to make our district a better place.

I am a parent of a 2nd grade student in the OUSD. I have seen with my own eyes and experience how Black students are unsupported and their schools defunded. My son attended Sankofa Academy in TK. It was a wonderful, caring community with great teachers and staff. We saw how underfunded the school was, learned about the years of neglect by OUSD and the detrimental effect of gentrification and racism endured by the school community. Schools like Sankofa deserve to be funded, supported and nourished by the city of Oakland and the school district. Instead it was constantly under threat of closing, funds cut, etc. Reparations for Black students must happen now!

As an OUSD teacher and parent, I am seeing the call for anti-racism throughout the district, within schools, parents, administration, and from the district. The Reparations for Black Students Resolution is anti-racist policy. Please VOTE YES on the Reparations for Black Students Resolution-- to repair the harm caused by decades of disinvestment--and to reinvest in Black students, families, schools and staff in OUSD.

I am writing to urge the school board to vote in support of the Reparations Resolution for black students. This is an important opportunity and I strongly hope that the board will unanimously adopt this resolution to show their commitment to supporting black students, families and teachers at OUSD.

I am currently a special education teacher in OUSD and have also worked as an instructional coach in the district, supporting a total of 10 schools. I have seen firsthand the impact of our failure to provide culturally responsive and anti-racist educational opportunities for our Black students. Please VOTE YES on the Reparations for Black Students Resolution - to repair the harm caused by decades of disinvestment - and to reinvest in Black students, families, schools, and staff in OUSD. As the COVID pandemic disproportionately impacts our Black students and families, we need this now more than ever.

Please consider reparations for African American students in OUSD schools. Although I do not have the details on what the plan will be, if it passes, it should include ensuring that schools in African-American neighborhoods do not close as well as money and resources to support African-American students academic success. This would include a rigorous data driven, best practices approach for individual students as well as African-American students as a collectively. Additionally more African American educators are needed and after they are recruited, they must be retained and actively supported. This only begins to address institutionalized and structural racism, which OUSD, a microcosm of our larger society has not escaped.
