20-2019 Submission Public Hearing by the Board of Education of Lighthouse Community Charter Public Schools - Lodestar: A Lighthouse Community Public School - Petition and Proposed Charter - Grades K-12 - July 1, 2021 - June 30, 2023 (2 Year Renewal).
Such a great school very attentive to all of my nieces and nephew. I'm a big part of their life and they only have possitives things to say and share of what they learn on a daily bases. They have new ideas and are talking about their future. This is great.
I am here to support charter schools I am happy to be a part of Lodestar. I am also happy that my daughter has a quality education and also a goal for college. and I believe that all children deserve a quality education
Hi I am commenting that I don't want Lodestar. When my daugther previous school I was worried about sending her to another school . I wanted the same type of setting and moral code of having the students being responsible for their actions and teaching independence.Lodestar exceeded my expectations and I love how hands on the teacher and staff is. My daugther has grown alot in a short time math was her hard subject now it's her strong subject and also became one of her favorite classes. . Its an add bonus that we live in the same neighborhood as the school it no longer take 3 -4 hours out our day to get back and forth to her school on a daily basis and its make it easy to get to her in case of a emergency, and we no longer have to get up at 530am.I will be crushed if Lodestar closes because the students deserve a great education to prepare for a great future our children are already at a disadvantage but at Lodestar they receive a awesome learning experience.
Hello I'm here commenting to support Lodestar.I really don't want Lodestar to close because Loadstar has been my school since first grade.I have noticed that it's really hard to find a school that can provide great strategies, excellent education and great teachers and that's exactly what Lodestar has. That's why I support Lodestar to stay open for many years to come.
Lodestar has help me over the year it has help learn stuff that i didn't know before i love this school so much and friends i have made and the relationship that i have built with teacher and the staff lodestar has help me come out of my shell and help me know that i have a voice to speak up what i need help on for my school so lodestar should not be close because it is a very school.
I support Lodestar's renewal as a long time educator and parent of 2 Lodestar kids and a 3rd attending next year. When our sons graduated from elementary, we visited 10 Oakland middle schools, district and charter and Lodestar was by far the best for academics and culture and it is right here in our East Oakland neighborhood. We love that we get to play a real part in the community here and we're looking forward to our school being here for us and our kids for years to come.
As the Chair of the Board of Directors for Lighthouse Community Public Schools, the CEO of Families in Action for Quality Education and an educator with over 20 years of experience in Oakland, I am a strong supporter of the renewal of the Lodestar charter. Lodestar has responded to its immense facility challenges which caused irregular enrollment over its first five years. Despite moving 3 times in 3 years, the educators and community have remained tenacious, ensuring that Lodestar students accelerate their learning over time. The dedication of the entire community to continuous improvement and their strong growth patterns to date are strong indicators that this school deserves a renewal and the opportunity to continue to lift its achievement.
My name is Ruth Ann Costanzo and I am the Clinical Director of the Stanford Teacher Education Program(STEP). Two of the administrators of Lodestar as well as several staff our graduates of STEP. I am proud of the work they re doing to serve the students and their families. They are an excellent model of a charter school that does research and designs their program based on the current needs of their community. The school also serves as a training site for future teacher who may work in Oakland.
Initially, I chose to become an educator at Lodestar because of the Core Values this school holds. It is so powerful that this school not only hold students to high academic standards, but also teaches students the importance of Love, Integrity, Agency, Community, and Social Justice. I’ve worked as an Expedition teacher for the last 3 years, and have seen this school community constantly work to overcome challenges. Lodestar needs to stay open so we can continue to grow and work together as a community to provide high quality education to the students of East Oakland.
Lodestar is a high quality public school option that East Oakland families deserve. In the first five years of its existence, Lodestar added hundreds of students every year at different grades, building mounting data of The Lodestar Effect -- the acceleration of learning that happens when students enter a learning environment that leans into the core values of love, integrity, social justice, and agency. Lodestar is currently being evaluated, per AB 1505, on ONLY 2 years of data from the five years in which it has existed as a school: 2017-18 and 2018-19, including hundreds of students in their first year at the school. During that time and since then, the data that has been disaggregated is clear: the longer a student is at Lodestar, the more they grow and accelerate their learning. Please support Lodestar's charter renewal, so that students can continue their growth!
Lighthouse debe permanecer abierta porque la calidad de educación para los estudiantes es superior a cualquier escuela de el distrito de Oakland, es el primer año de mi hija en ésta escuela y he mirado muchas diferencias positivas.
I feel apologetic that I am not verbose in my advocating for Lodestar and Lighthouse K-8 to be renewal, but do not take that for a lack of enthusiasm and pride I have for this school community. I love standing (virtually) alongside my staff peers and pushing for the best academic and emotional environment for all. I believe we should be allowed to continue to prove that all our positive structures also show strong outcomes for your students and families. Keep these schools open, Oakland deserves a community that is working this hard for it.
I teach at Lodestar because I believe that our students deserve learning experiences that are rigorous, joyful, and rooted in our shared values of community, integrity, love, social justice, and agency. Please listen to the student, family, and community voices that are calling for Lodestar's charter renewal.
As a former staff member of Lighthouse Community Public Schools and a current Board Member, I firmly support the renewal of Lodestar. Lodestar built a program to empower students in East Oakland as Change Makers - and LCPS is fully committed to realizing that vision. Moving between 3 different locations over 5 years was not easy - and the students and data shifted over that time. However, Lodestar and LCPS have been nimble in the response to this challenge - and to the current pandemic - working with students and families to provide a program that meets their needs and will propel the community forward. Building diversity within our staff (80% BIPOC) and student body, implementing data systems not just for student outcomes but adult actions, and implementing a rigorous standards-based EL Education are all priorities that will move this program forward. This community deserves a two-year renewal, or five, to show the results of its program now that it is in its "forever home."
Lighthouse has been a really good school for my son who just entered kindergarten. The teachers are very patient especially dealing with kids during these difficult times. I appreciate all the help they provide and my son has learned so much in such a short period of time.
