I support the amendment to postpone closures at Community Day School and Parker, and the truncation at La Escuelita. But I also demand the following:
1. That OUSD move forward with an Equity Impact Analysis of the final, amended list of closures; and
2. That OUSD conduct a fiscal analysis of the revised plans for closures and truncations.
This closure process - and its amendments - have been chaotic, non-strategic, and problematic from start to finish. Pushing back these closures and the truncation means there is time for the District to study the equity and fiscal impact of these changes, and determine whether they are truly worth the community cost. Please address the larger issues of this crises with comprehensive and strategic planning that keeps equity at the center of final decisions.
don’t close the schools, each school is there for a reason and the people there found that school they are most comfortable with. having kids go to other schools that are far away that they don’t know and that have more people is stressful and definitely going to decrease the focus those kids have right now. Also teachers and all the staff are helpful and need these jobs especially at this point in life these deserve to keep their jobs. this will impact so many people please don’t merge the school and fire the teachers!
I support the amendment to postpone the school closures. As a parent and member of the Oakland community I do not support these school closures. We must also center the experiences and needs of Black and brown students and families in Oakland - who will be directly impacted by this!
Please do not close the schools! Oakland needs to prioritize our Black and brown students. There are also so few options for Spanish speaking students in Oakland. I support the amendment to postpone OUSD school closures.
What a slap in the face it is to the people born and raised in Oakland that you politicians use the phrase “Black Lives Matter” to gain votes, meanwhile as soon as you can, you drop kick these Black and Brown children and continuously take away opportunities for them to flourish. And then of course you’ll be trying to demonize them as soon as they hit an age where you can see that your conscious actions knowingly have placed them further in a position of survival. Seriously it is outrageous that you’re even considering closing this many schools at once, for the sole reasoning of “profit.” Although it’s no surprise that you see those who aren’t wealthy and popular as worthless body counts, you can make a difference for these children and your impact can make or break lives and livelihoods right now. Stop all of the school closures so you all don’t have to face your conscience and karma while you’re stuck in purgatory. You know this is wrong.
As a friend of an oakland grade school teacher, and a past long time resident of East Oakland, I have seen and heard how crucial these schools are for the uplifting of communities in need. These schools should not be closed as they provide a sanctuary for many students and their families. The OUSD Board obviously does not have the well-being of children and families in mind, seeking ridiculous, lazy, and damaging solutions that make life harder for these already grossly underserved communities. Vote out the board, and stop closing schools. With a budget surplus in CA, this is not an option.
I support the amendment to postpone the proposed school closures. These closures would increase racial and economic injustice in Oakland's public education system, disproportionately hurting Black and Brown youth. The school district's budget should never be balanced on the backs of Oakland's youth of color, and it's past time for the District to develop more visionary solutions that are led by youth and families of color.
I support the amendment to postpone the proposed school consolidations. We need to invest in and protect our public schools. School closures and mergers will disrupt and delay the education of Black and brown students. Invest in the futures of BIPOC students.
I OPPOSE the school closures. It is clear that YOU need to establish a much better community process in order to make headway of the issues. In fact, to identify what the issues are! In order to address the budget issues, I want you to stand up to the State regarding the illegitimate loan that was imposed on OUSD so long ago. You need to be as strong as the Freedom Fighter Hunger Strikers! Get some spine and stand up!
I applaud Mike Hutchinson and Cedric Van Williams for standing strong on this issue.
I support the amendment to postpone the proposed school consolidations. Moreover, I am with my community as we demand no more closures and no mergers of our public schools! Invest in our youth! Center Black and brown students and cut from the top!
Hello, I am in support of the amendement to postpone school closing and against any school closings at all. In a time of crisis why would we take a away already scarce resources? Please, let’s build a better world where resources like schools are prioritized and held as critical parts of our community, especially when they’re are effecting already discriminated against and vulnerable populations
Please postpone the closures/consolidations of the schools and then find a way not to close the schools. Closures will disproportionately affect students of color. Keep the schools open!
I feel like they shouldn’t close schools down because we need to learn and people are trying to graduate because you need a diploma for a better job and career.
Keep the schools open! Honor black lives, honor black education, end the strike today.
Defend and abolish police and fund our youth!
