I support including a new building for CCPA in the bond-funded facilities projects. We agreed to double our school’s size over time premised on a new building being built to make that happen. The board should follow through on that promise. If the board and district truly believe that we offer a high quality program for students (as I believe we do), they should enable us to deliver that instruction in a real building and not disrespect students and families with a temporary solution.

Please support the allocation of funding for the renovation and expansion of Melrose Leadership Academy. We desperately need funding from the Facilities Bond Proposal to help improve our aging campus which is currently spread out on two different locations because we ALREADY out grew the old building we were in. This is putting such a strain on the community and the school resources. An influx of capital would allow us to improve & expand our Maxwell Park facilities where some classrooms reach over 100 degrees in the summer making them unbearable for learning. Our cafeteria (whose kitchen is not worth mentioning) also serves as the assembly hall, the special ed classroom, the gym and playground when it rains. We need more buildings on our existing campus. As a spanish immersion school, we provide a unique opportunity for the Oakland community to have their children learn to speak Spanish from an early age. But we need to continue to do so in a safe and sustainable manner. Support!

I support this bond and urge the board to fund the project at CCPA. When the Board encouraged CCPA to grow it was with the understanding that the campus would need to grow to meet the needs of the community. Without new buildings we will run out of space to teach our students. Students in East Oakland deserve a quality school with enough space to serve them.

As an alumni, sister, aunt and staff member of CCPA I get to see the urgent need of those facilities that we were promised. Students can’t be educated in overcrowded spaces and we as a school, can’t be expected to expand for our neighborhood without getting these facilities. Due to this, I support the bond which will fund our new building that is urgently needed.

I am a parent at Melrose Leadership Academy. MLA is a school that is in high-demand as a high-quality dual immersion school and keeps Oakland families in Oakland Unified Schools. We have a long wait list of over 400 families, but we can't enroll more students because we don't have enough space. Our current site only has the capacity for 400 students, but next year we will have over 625 students. We need more space by adding a new building to our campus so we don't have to split across two sites.

I support the proposal for Melrose Leadership Academy's Maxwell site to receive funds for much-needed improvements, in order to more safely accommodate its 600 students and grow to meet community demand.

Melrose Leadership Academy should be expanded and renovated to accommodate more students for this high performing and in demand school.

I am a teacher at CCPA and was directly a part of the first year of expansion at the school this past academic year. It became abundantly clear throughout the year that students need more space on our campus to grow and learn, especially as the school continues to expand over the coming years. The Board needs to follow through on supporting this East Oakland community by providing our school the proper space for students to learn - it is an immediate need. Thank you.

I would like to support necessary the construction of vital classroom space to support CCPA’s expansion. I worry about our voices getting drowned out by larger schools, more privileged parent communities, and more prominent alumni networks. Our construction isn’t a luxury - it is absolutely crucial to our ability to expand per the board’s directive and approval. Without new construction, we simply run out of space. If the district is serious about investing in quality for the future, this is the opportunity to do so.

    I support this bond
And upgrades for so many schools
In desperate need for facility improvements. I especially support the Melrose Leadership Academy projects as they are in great need of repair, seismic upgrades, new heating system and so much more! It’s a K-8 Spanish immersion school serving 600 families. Our middle school needs lab spaces and gym type spaces. We are split across two campuses recently, splitting our community and making it more difficult for all. Even the other campus is in need of great repairs.

I would like to express support for including the Maxwell campus of Melrose Leadership Academy on the list for the General Obligation Bond. Our growing school is in need of major facilities upgrades just to make our campus safe to learn. Our classrooms are too hot, we have no any athletic facilities or access to water or shade when kids are playing on the yard, and our middle schoolers do not have science labs or lockers. We are a high-demand, high-quality dual immersion school and we need more space so we don't have to split across two sites. Thank you.

I am writing to express my support of using bond money to improve the facilities of Melrose Leadership Academy. The school is in desperate need of improvements to ensure the safety and learning of the students. There are multiple projects that need to be completed in order for the students to be safe including a new boiler, shade and water in the yard, science labs and lockers.

I want to express my support for using some of the bond proceeds to expand the facilities at the Maxwell campus of Melrose Leadership Academy. The growing school is starved for additional facilities and could greatly use the relief this would provide.

I am an educator at CCPA and I witness the disadvantages that our students have due to the lack of spaces to properly be serve. Overcrowded classroom is not the right place for learning. Completing the project that was already approve by the Board should not be a point of discussion. Providing these young minds with the proper spaces for thrive is a mandate for all of us.

Please support this measure. The Melrose Leadership Academy in the Maxwell Park building desperately needs repairs and additions to its campus. We have out-grown that facility and it desperately needs air conditioning and better heating, as well as a working drinking fountains on the playgrounds! Please keep them on the list to receive funding for this work.
    Respectfully submitted

It is important that CCPA receives the facilities as promised for the near future to continue the great work that has been happening on this campus for the last decade. As CCPA expands and brings in more of the neighborhood students, we need the space to implement programs to ensure our students receive an excellent well rounded education. As a community school, we have took on the responsibility of creating bonds within the neighborhood and rearing kids to appreciate and understand the importance of changing their neighborhoods. We need these spaces to continue doing that work as we will outgrow the space we have in 2 years, which would greatly hinder our impact.
Please support the bond and follow through on the agreement. This greatly affects the kids here that we have developed relationships with over the past few years and kids near future.
    Thank you.

CCPA is doubling in size for the next six years. Without a new building, we will quickly (by 2022) outgrow our current space. I worked a the school during its first growth period when we did not have enough space and it is a terrible experience for students and staff. CCPA, and this community, have often been overlooked with regards to facilities. The new building that we did get for our growing into
6-12 was late and not actually big enough for the expansion. We have fields behind us that we cannot even use while most other middle schools received new turf fields.
When CCPA decided to take on this expansion, the board recognized the need for more space. If the board does not follow through on its promise here this East Oakland community will again be overlooked. Please prioritize where there is demand from families for spots at our school.

Melrose Leadership Academy is the hidden gem of OUSD in every way... except our facilities. We desperately need fund from the Facilities Bond Proposal to help improve our aging campus. Currently, our school is spread out to two different locations - which is putting a strain on the community and the school resources. An influx of capital would allow us to improve & expand our Maxwell Park facilities - currently listed as alevel 4 in the Facilities Condition Index. Our classrooms reach over 110 degrees making them too hot to learn. We don't have athletic facilities (field or a gym). Our students don't have access to water or shade when playing outside.

In addition, until recently, OUSD was lacking SDC classes targeted to Spanish speakers - a huge gap that Melrose has filled. Supporting this campus helps not just the current community, but allows for special ed to continue to be accessible to those where Spanish is their first and only language.
