Not enough people know about this vote taking place. Not enough research has been done on effectiveness and the claims. The community is kept in the dark. The resolution is being passed as some kind of reparations fix when in fact in ushers radical race-centric ideas into our classrooms. No white 1st grader should be taught about white privilege, no black 1st grader should be taught victimology. It’s toxic. Vote NO if you care about equality and fairness in our schools.
I’m a black dad with three kids. My two oldest have graduated from Tech and the youngest is still in the OUSD system. I grew up in Oakland and attended its public schools as a young black kid. My parents (and I’m sure yours too) taught me never to ask for handouts. We are forgetting the preachings of Martin Luther King Jr. Who said “Don’t judge me by the color of my skin but by the content of my character”. I don’t want my kids getting handouts. I don’t want them to be excused if they do something wrong! I want them to be treated like everyone else. A yes vote is a step backwards. There are other ways to help our failing students without inviting a racial ideologies into our schools. Please vote NO
Please VOTE YES on Reparations for Black Students Resolution! We need to invest in Black students, staff, and communities and begin to repair the legacy of harm done by decades of discrimination, disinvestment, and criminalization.
As a mother of two kids in OUSD, I strongly support the resolution for reparations for Black students. We must do something about the racial disparity between students — it negatively impacts our whole community when some students aren’t getting what they need. This is a social justice issue and I urge the board members to vote with integrity knowing that this is a crossroads in the history of OUSD. The parents are all watching how the board members will vote.
I am a D2 resident and a community faith leader who has lived in Oakland for almost 24 years. I am writing in support of Reparations for Black students. Oakland has a proud history as a national leader in Black-led movements for social justice and liberation. We also have a shameful history of systemic discrimination against our Black community and young people in the form of police violence, hyper-criminalization, disinvestment, displacement, and the impacts of gentrification. As a community is it our ethical responsibility to strive to repair the damage that has been done. I urge passage of this resolution as an important step in that direction. Let us invest in the brilliance of young Black people who have for so long suffered the harms of an unjust system. ALL young people, families, and all of our communities will benefit.
