As a Black educator and mother of two Oakland Unified students, I fully support the Reparations for Black Students Resolution. Black families represent the highest population of the houseless in our community. Black people have been historically disenfranchised. Black students are disproportionally represented in Special Education and in suspensions. If we want our school district to improve in terms of how students are served and if we want Oakland to improve as city in terms of how people are being taken care of, the steps outlined in this plan need to happen.
I support 100% reparation for Black students and Black families. For years our education system has not invested in our kids, In this time of racial justice, it's even more important to give help where help is needed. That help should be to Black students and Black kids. Put on the agenda the reparations resolution and stop acting like we don't need this for Black families.
This is long overdue. Black people in this country, in general, deserve reparations and our Black students in Oakland, specifically, deserve this. This is a community-developed plan that will radically change the investments, both financially and emotionally, that are given to Black students in our district. Please do not ignore this any longer. This should be priority #1 because this has been a decades long battle.
As an Oakland educator, I fully support the Reparations for Black Students Resolution and stand with our Black students, families, educators and community members in demanding that the OUSD School Board unanimously this resolution
As an mixed Black alum, parent and teacher in OUSD, we need more institutional attention and funding to support our Black students and families. The Oakland where I grew up was an Oakland with a thriving Black community. Because of gentrification and pushout, that community has diminished significantly. Please pass this legislation that will allow us to give more institutional support to Black students.
I hope you will support this resolution because our black students deserve to feel safe and supported at school. We must create a multi-million dollar reparations fund and begin to invest in Black students and families to repair generations of harm.
I Support the Reparations for Black Students Resolution and demand the School Board:
1. Unanimously Pass the Reparations for Black Students Resolution by February 28, 2021!
2. Work in partnership with the City, County, and private philanthropy to identify and secure the millions in annual resources necessary to implement the Reparations for Black Students Resolution by June 30, 2021
3. Support a community driven implementation and monitoring plan that is included in the OUSD Strategic Plan by June 30,2021
Oakland Black students are brilliant yet stuck in a system that intentionally and unintentionally harms them due to anti-black racism. For years, Black students and parents have named what works and does not work to generate student success in engagement processes from classroom to the board room. As a Board, it's time to acknowledge that many Black students and families have not felt heard or seen. It is 2021- the start of a new decade and the time to prioritize Black Student Success. Today, I submit this e-comment on behalf of Bay Area PLAN and our Oakland black parents and students who want change now. We are proud to be a member of the Black Working Group of Justice for Oakland Students Coalition (J4OS). And, we are urging you to work in partnership with black students and their families in transparent ways to pass this resolution by February 28th. Today, we need you to take the first step and schedule this resolution for a first reading on February 10!
It is past time for OUSD to repair the harm to Black students and families by policies which underfund, displace and disregard Black communities. Please support our Black students and families by voting YES on this item during Black History Month.
