As an Oakland resident, I support the Reparations for Black Students Resolution and demand the School Board:
1. Unanimously Pass the Reparations for Black Students Resolution by February 28, 2021!
2. Work in partnership with the City, County, and private philanthropy to identify and secure the millions in annual resources necessary to implement the Reparations for Black Students Resolution by June 30, 2021
3. Support a community-driven implementation and monitoring plan that is included in the OUSD Strategic Plan by June 30, 2021
Over the past two decades, OUSD has closed 16 majority Black schools, forcing more than 18,000 Black students out of the district. In partnership with Black leaders calling for a greater investment in the Black community in Oakland - we demand that OUSD create a multi-million dollar reparations fund and begin to invest in Black students and families so all Black students succeed!
I strongly support the Resolution for Reparations for Black Students. I am a teacher in East Oakland and on the current bargaining team. Its encouraging to see that OEA and the current school board are working together to make substantial movement toward ensuring that our black students and families are being addressed in a meaningful way.
I am in strong favor of the board passing the resolution for reparations for Black students. For years the board has claimed to prioritize the equity of all students in OUSD and yet the reality has been that it’s far from the truth. Many of the new board members now elected into their current roles were elected because of their platform of bold visions fo racial justice in our district. Please vote yes on this resolution to take a step towards racial equity.
As an African American OUSD teacher, bargaining team member, graduate, and mother of 2 current OUSD students, I fully support this resolution. I have seen this district change drastically over the past 40 years. I am up close and personal with what I see as an educational emergency, and our duty as an educational system to make dramatic improvements in the ways in which we engage with, retain, support and educate our African American students. Thank you.
My name is Edgar Sanchez and I am a teacher in East Oakland and a parent of 2 daughters that go to OUSD schools. One goes to Manzanita SEED and the other to UFSA. I Support the Reparations for Black Students Resolution and demand the School Board: 1. Unanimously Pass the Reparations for Black Students Resolution by February 28, 2021! As a Chicano I know the realities people of color go through when it comes to discrimination and racism. The Black community faces a whole set of oppressive conditions, from historically being underfunded to anti-black racism in schools. I support this resolution wholeheartedly!
I am a parent of a third grader at Sequoia Elementary and a graduate of Crocker Highlands, Edan Brewer, and Skyline. I support the Reparations for Black Students resolution and ask the School Board to agendize the resolution for 2/10 and 2/24 - so it is voted on and passed by the end of Black History Month.
As an OUSD educator, I fully and strongly support this resolution. Our Black students have been historically underserved and we should take every step to address the systemic racism of our educational systems.
Resolution No. 2021-0037 - Reparations for Black Students is the bold action we must take to serve our students. The solutions presented in this resolution must be implemented. Support our Black Students in OUSD and pass the resolution by the end of February.
As an Interfaith minister residing and working in Oakland, I strongly and enthusiastically support the Resolution: Reparations for Black Students.
The School Board should pass this Resolution--unanimously.
The Board should also support a community-driven implementation and monitoring plan by June 30, 2021.
Public schools are a sacred treasure within our City and County ... they must not be privatized.
The Board needs to demonstrate its commitment and social governance skills by joining in partnership with the City and County, along with private philanthropy organizations to insure that there are ample funds to implement the Resolution.
It is time to seize this moment to begin the moral and necessary repair of harms done to our black children and youth by taking the active steps so powerfully represented by this Resolution.

I write as a mother, taxpayer, and public school teacher in total support of Black Reparations in OUSD. We elected much-needed new energy and vision to the school board—during a movement that rightfully calls for the Defunding of Police— exactly to see critical interventions and reparations like these. Black students and families across Oakland have been targeted and maligned by and within OUSD for generations. This effort is an important part of the whole.

I am fully in support of black sanctuary. I am a property own in district 7. I am appalled that charter schools and co-locations are on the board agenda. Our public schools must not be privatized.

1. There is a public hearing for a material revision to the ERES Aspire charter school charter so they can expand their enrollment from 250 to 550.

I firmly support the adoption of the Reparations for Black Students Resolution. It's time to repair the harm that has been done to Black students and work towards and equitable future. The OUSD board needs to work closely with Black teachers, parents, community orgs, and student leaders to keep their voice at the center of policies that impact them.
