Dear OUSD Board, I’m writing in support of the reparations campaign. Please join us support our underprivileged community especially our Black. Thank you for your support!
It is so important to acknowledge the wrong that has been in existence for our Black children and families. Action needs to be taken, adopt the resolution!
In the wake of last year's Black Lives Matter uprisings, the time is now for Oakland Unified to adopt this plan for reparations for Black students, educators, and families. As a public school teacher in Oakland, I see firsthand how Black students are brilliant, yet stuck in a system that intentionally and unintentionally harms them due to anti-black racism. Over the last five years, Black students and parents have named what works for them and what does not. Now is the time to pass this plan and begin undoing decades of anti-Black racism in Oakland Public Schools.
There are some really compelling proposals in here and I salute the call for increased achievement and outcomes for Black students. I also really appreciate the call for increased support and engagement of Black families. However, I'm mystified as to why a policy on Black Reparations would include keep Black charter students off of shared campuses. Is this really a STUDENT centered agenda? Or is it another attempt to weave in a dehumanizing anti-charter agenda? Folks, 1/3 of Oakland's public school families have spoken and chosen charter schools. Why are we trying to divide Oakland families and students?
Black Students deserve to be a priority to the OUSD Board, Superintendent, Administrators, Principals, Educators, Community Now!
We are calling on you to pass the Reparations for Black Students Resolution and commit to creating a plan and fundraising for the
resources Black Students are owed.
Much respect to the leadership and vision of those who put this brilliant plan together. I think this resolution sounds like a really good idea. We cannot undo the past, sadly. But we can act now, and thank goodness the political climate is right for action. What an amazing legacy as a school board it will be if you unanimously support this initiative and work as a team to see it through!
I support this resolution for reparations for Black students! I am a teacher at MetWest High School and it is time we structurally support Black students in OUSD explicitly and repair unmeasurable harm.
After decades of disinvestment, closing 16 majority Black schools, and pushing out 18,000 Black students from our district in the last 20 years - it’s time for OUSD to pass the Reparations Resolution for Black Students to ensure all Black students succeed! I call on the School Board to pass the resolution and create a multi-million dollar fund to begin investing in Black students and families and repair generations of harm.
As a member of the OEA Bargaining Team, and a teacher at a Dual Immersion school in the historic Fruitvale Neighborhood, I support the Reparations for Black Students Resolution and implore the School Board to listen to our Black Students, Families, Educators, and Service Providers. Please take the following steps:
1. Unanimously pass the Reparations for Black Students Resolution by February 28, 2021!
2. Work in partnership with the City, County, and private philanthropy to identify and secure the millions in annual resources necessary to implement the Reparations for Black Students Resolution by June 30, 2021.
3. Support a community driven implementation and monitoring plan that is included in the OUSD Strategic Plan by June 30, 2021.
Thanks you and thanks to the community for pushing this forward.
As an educator in Oakland as well as a resident, I strongly encourage OUSD to unanimously support Reparations for Black Students Resolution. This is an opportunity to show our students how much we believe in them and our commitment to their future.

As a black woman, who raised black children, and an Educator and part of the organizing of The "Black Reparations Resolution". I stand in support of and strongly urge the Board to unanimously pass the "Black Reparations Resolution" on behalf of every black student in OUSD by Feb 28th and to meet the demands outlined in the Resolution. The History of criminalization, inequity ,marginalization, and institutional racism and injustices and harm to our children has over a 500 year History. The invisibility of our children, demoralization of our children must end.
