20-2019 Submission Public Hearing by the Board of Education of Lighthouse Community Charter Public Schools - Lodestar: A Lighthouse Community Public School - Petition and Proposed Charter - Grades K-12 - July 1, 2021 - June 30, 2023 (2 Year Renewal).
I am a parent of two Lodestar middle school students. Our two boys are African American and at Lodestar they have experienced their first Black male teachers in their school careers (they spent K-5 in a district-run school), and those teachers were, like every teacher we have had at Lodestar, excellent, dedicated, inspiring, rigorous and caring teachers. The classwork is challenging and all teachers have high expectations of students. The school leadership goes above and beyond, and the school's COVID-19 plans have been very well organized since the first day of school.
Lodestar is vital to a community where resources are low. They not only deliver a quality education but they invest in the students. Lodestar has changed my children’s attitude toward learning.
My son has been a Lodestar student since they opened. He entered as a first grader behind in reading. With the support of all of his teachers he was able to grow and surpass grade level expectations in reading and writing by the third grade. This is something that many Oakland schools fail to provide for African American Males Students. My son has learned to be an advocate for his own learning and his peers. As an OUSD graduate and OEA member I fully support the Lodestar campus in their efforts to get board approval.
I have had my ups and downs with Lodestar but i wouldn't want my child at any other school. I feel their academics are one of a kind and I won't find it anywhere else. I support.
We have been at Lodestar since kindergarten and as a parent of a child whose learning support is higher than average, the rotating curriculum has really benefitted her. She doesn't feel left behind as she gets special attention in small groups with other children at her level. The atmosphere is fluid and helps teach the kids to identify the things they need to learn best, giving them autonomy and agency. The administration is supportive and communicative and actually talks to one another so they can support each child uniquely. I am in an incme bracket where o can't afford tutors or private schooling but Lodestar offers so many more opportunities for my daughter and the inclusivity and diversity on campus in general is wonderful for us.

My son has attended other publicly funded schools in Oakland. He's been at Lodestar for 3 years - never been happier socially and academically - a multi-ethnic child, he feels totally accepted at Lodestar. His grades and test scores have gone up each year at Lodestar and now he's a consistently good student. Staff increasingly come from the same ethnic communities as students - his least experienced teacher has 14 years experience. Core values of love, social justice, community and agency are evident in every aspect of how the school functions. Lodestar pivoted fast with creative solutions for long distance learning. Despite the innate drawbacks, they do an amazing job - never satisfied with good enough, they continue to work to improve consistently involving families in all processes. Lodestar is at the forefront of supporting families academically, technologically and in community. Most families are low income, many ESL, nearly all BIPOC. This is an incredible school.
As a grandparent with two grandkids who have graduated from Lighthouse charter/public school both with the IEP’s I would greatly appreciate if you would grant us five more years of operation my grandkids are thriving and my heart will be very sad if we couldn’t continue our education at lighthouse, OUSD hear us can we not be so heartless, selfish and uneducated about Charter schools it’s a school too; that open up a whole new way of learning that all of my grandchildren with IEP’s with two that have graduated and I have three more to go 11th grader a 10th grader and a 8th grader who loves their school. We need to tear down the wall of hate towards charter/public and realize that it is a school of Choice for us parents. So I’m asking for five more years the ball is in your hands. But I will not not let my voice be unheard as a grandparent who chose better for my grandchildren who have a learning disability and was able to graduate go to college finish now have her own business. Thanks
I have been a part of Oakland schools my whole life as a student and now as an educator. When I joined Lodestar a few years ago I was able to see the love and passions teachers and leaders have for the social emotional learning and education for children. Lodestar continues to always go above and beyond to support children and families in the Oakland community as they partner with other organizations and programs that support student growth and development that leads to student success. Please let Lodestar continue to provide students with love and care, education, and success.
I want my daughter to continue receiving her education at Lodestar Public Charter School because I like the type of learning that she receives.
I love the courses available and the environment overall. I have seen her grow as a person throughout the two years that she has attended this school. Please recertify Lodestar Charter School. I think we as parents and our kids as students have the right to choose the type of school they attend. Please honor our request for more years.
I’m a mother of three children, Charters schools such as lodestar and lighthouse have helped my children with the criteria’s that they have struggled with. The teachers and staff are very involved with the students and care for them. My kids have been to different schools such as public school and didn’t get the proper support they needed. Imagine if more children went to public schools it would be more difficult for the staff to give them one on one dedicated time and effort that public schools can’t provide .
My first year at Lodestar I knew I had found a place where I could grow as an educator and be a part of a community that cared about its staff, its families, and its students. That is what Lodestar has been for me these last three years. I have had the opportunity to stretch my skills and develop my practices as a teacher, surrounded by incredible co-workers who love the work and are dedicated to producing positive outcomes for our students. I have also had the good fortune of collaborating with fellow PoC, who are so often underpresented in Oakland schools, discussing how we can ensure equity in education and honor the diversity of our families in our classrooms. I've been blessed with partnering with parents who remind me of my own immigrant parents, who without knowing the ins and outs of the educational system or even the dominant language of school, work tirelessly alongside teachers to ensure their child is learning. Lodestar is a community that deserves to continue.
