I.-1 20-1335 Adoption by the Board of Education of Resolution No. 1920-0260 - George Floyd Resolution to Eliminate the Oakland Schools Police Department.
My name is Aly Kronick and I am a teacher at Oakland International High School. I strongly support all board members to vote for Black Organizing Project's George Floyd Resolution to eliminate police in our schools.
As a district that has prided ourselves on practicing and promoting Restorative Justice practices, we cannot have a budget of over $3 million going towards police AND support Restorative Justice. It is time that Oakland schools stand with the community in removing police from our schools so that we can provide our students with a safe and nurturing environments founded on RJ principles. With budget cuts continuing to mount, year to year, our students need more counselors, school supplies, and smaller class sizes to allow our youth to thrive.
You have teachers, educators, parents, students and community members who are willing and ready to work with you to ensure that our students are safe and nurtured without the presence of police on our campuses.
I'm a landscape architect and District 1 resident commenting in support of the BOP's George Floyd Resolution. As the Board President shared last week there is a direct correlation between systemic racism and inequalities we see surrounding this pandemic. The built environment, the places we inhabit, directly relate to the health, safety, and welfare of the people who inhabit those spaces. Criminalization of children through policing and surveillance is wrong. OUSD cannot afford this school department, morally or economically. Do the right thing and foster places intended FOR learning conducive TO learning.
I support the resolution to eliminate the Oakland Schools Police Force. I believe that police in OUSD schools harm students by replacing already sparse counseling services and key support relationships with early, and often negative, encounters with law enforcement. These encounters differentially target and harm minority and low-SES students later in life and place them even further from the support and services they need.
There is no reason to have armed officers in our schools. Police in schools has, on the main, contributed to the school-to-prison pipeline and enacted violence on students of color.
As an OUSD educator, I implore this board to address the needs of our students so that our students can actually "thrive!" We need to ditch the punishment model! We need actual resources that address the real needs of our students like school counselors, nurses, psychologists, and investments into the well being of our students, families, and staff! Listen to the community! Listen to your students! Listen to the parents! Listen to your staff! Pass this resolution to show you truly care about our black and brown students of Oakland!
Dear Directors, I support this resolution to eliminate police from our children's schools. The money is much better spent on mental health and special education services so underresourced in our communities. If the teachers and principals can't manage the kids, then they should be replaced by capable, culturally competent professionals who serve our youth and don't criminalize them. Let's fulfill our youth's full potential!

I stand with BOP, OEA, students, teachers, and parents in support of the George Floyd Resolution. Please pass thisv resolution with no ammendments. Our young people deserve an educational environment that supports wellness, learning, and restorative processes, not one that creates fear and promotes criminalization.
Black students and families deserve the opportunity to attend school campuses in OUSD without fear for their own safety or that they will be singled out or targeted due to systemic racism and implicit bias that runs rampant in our society. Please remove police officers from OUSD and stop the school to prison pipeline. I am an OUSD parent and I support the George Floyd Resolution to Eliminate the Oakland School Police Department.
I am an 11th grade teacher at Oakland International High School and asking you to pass the George Floyd Resolution to Eliminate the Oakland School Police Department and remove police from OUSD schools in accordance with The Black Organizing Project’s People’s Plan for Police-Free Schools. We have faced year after year of budget cuts, and face more this year, which has a huge impact on student learning and learning environments. Everything from classroom materials, counselors, wellness center resources, librarians, teacher stipends, clubs and student leadership programs, after school programs, field trips, etc. have been impacted by the defunding of our schools. We do not need to pay to have police in our schools, when we can allocate that money to create an environment where ALL students feel safe, supported and have the resources to thrive.
Please pass this resolution and remove police from the OUSD. Police do not keep children and schools safe. Please help make real change happen by passing this resolution.
I urge all board members to vote yes and adopt the George Floyd resolution as it is, with no amendments. Please ensure BOP’s participation in the creation and implementation process. Please make a commitment to support BOP's plan because we know how thoughtful they have been about this work for over 8 years and they represent Black students and families, in their demand for the opportunity to attend schools free of fear and police presence. It's time to recognize the voices of the people on the ground, doing the work in our community. Our current system is not working. It is time to reimagine how we keep students safe and create better ways to support and nurture our students.
-Colleen Rau, OUSD parent and teacher
I support ending Oakland unified school district's police presence. Let's fund educators with the money instead. OUSD will also still be on the hook for equitable safety for all students.

Our babies are not criminals, and they shouldn’t be treated as if they are.
It is time for all of you to stand with the community. It is time for you to do the right thing for once.
