My name is Betsy Kinsey. I am an instructional support specialist with OUSD at Edna Brewer Middle School. I urge you to adopt BOP's George Floyd Resolution with no amendments.

I am an OUSD educator and I firmly support Black Sanctuary. Our students, families, and staff are not safer with the presence of police. OSPD should be eliminated. This is the demand of the people. The people have proposed alternatives, we have done the research, and we can get rid of OSPD TODAY! Invest in our schools, our community, and our future. Do not fund cops. Instead, fund counselors, libraries, special education staff, nurses, restorative justice specialists. This is how we keep us safe. Not with police.

    Thank you,
    Betsy Kinsey

Given the OPD is still under federal oversight for racist behavior (the longest oversight of any force in US history) and it’s recent pattern of trafficking children for sex, can the board explain what risk analysis it maintains, as part of its contracting of the Oakland Police Department. If there is no risk analysis, can the board please acknowledge this.

I am an OUSD alum and I strongly support the George Floyd Resolution to defund OUSD police. The resolution should be passed without amendments or changes to ensure that we can make Oakland schools safe for all folks, especially POC, and so we can reinvest in our greatly underfunded schools.

I am a special education teacher and an Oakland resident. I urge the board to support Black Organizing Project's George Floyd Resolution without amendments to eliminate police in OUSD schools. Our black students and especially our students with disabilities are disproportionately affected by police presence in schools. We need to reinvest in our counselors, mental health specialists, special education supports, nurses, restorative practices etc. Across the country, school districts are creating safer schools and Oakland must do the same.

I am an OUSD teacher, and I fully support the George Floyd Resolution. Police has no place in our schools. Let’s replace police with Restorative Justice coordinators, counselors, nurses, social workers, case managers and therapists who will support, protect and embrace our children and community. Our black and brown children will never feel safe with police present in our schools.

I am writing today in support of the George Floyd Resolution to Eliminate the Oakland School Police Department without any amendments. I urge you to remove police from OUSD schools in accordance with The Black Organizing Project’s People’s Plan for Police-Free Schools. Oakland students deserve safe and healthy learning environments, not to be traumatized by police at school. It's time to re-imagine school safety. Thank you.

I am an OUSD teacher at Skyline H.S. in full support of the George Floyd Resolution. Time and time again police have proven they DO NOT provide the services necessary to ensure our students safety. Please listen to our students and their communities when they say they know what will keep them safe and healthy–eliminate school police so we can reallocate those funds to much needed services like mental health, nurses, etc.

My name is Eleanor Adachi and I am a resident of Oakland. I ask that the board pass the George Floyd Resolution to Eliminate the Oakland Schools Police Department without amendment. I support this resolution because I believe that police do not belong in our schools; that we should redirect funds from police to teachers, counselors, and student services; and that revising our district safety plan must be an inclusive, community-driven process.

Get cops out of schools. This is essential to end the school to prison pipeline. Get counselors, therapists, and more resources into our communities.

I am writing in full support of this resolution. Please remove police from schools ASAP! Oakland has a chance to be a model and take a step toward becoming a true sanctuary for Black and Brown youth. Today is that day. I'm so proud of my city and the OUSD in hopes of the Board will make the right choice.

It is time to cut off the school to prison pipeline AT IT'S SOURCE. Police in schools only escalate violence. We can not keep treating trauma with violence. Our young people deserve to be supported with the mental health care, community care, mentorship, and basic needs (food, safty, community) support they need to thrive. This is complex and nuanced for each young person. And requires individual attention and RESOURCES. Not police. Not further punishment. Not further violence.
