My name is Gina Acebo and I was born and raised in East Oakland and continue to work in downtown Oakland.

I'm reaching out to all the OUSD School Board members to ask that you vote YES for the George Floyd Resolution with no amendments at tonight's OUSD school board meeting. Our young people, especially Black and youth of color do not feel safe with police in their Oakland schools and ask that what really keeps them safe are counselors, mentors, mental health supports, health supports, programs that enhance their learning like music, art, trained teachers with culturally competent skills to teach Ethnic Studies and other subjects that get them ready to serve our communities when they become adults.

As a third generation Pilipina Oaklander, I see your vote and leadership to help make police-free schools vital for the health and well-being of all our Oakland students. Please do the right thing: Vote YES for the George Floyd Resolution with no amendments.

    Sincerely,
    Regina Acebo

I am a concerned community member in Oakland. I am writing to ask you to pass the George Floyd Resolution to Eliminate the Oakland School Police Department and remove police from OUSD schools in accordance with The Black Organizing Project’s People’s Plan for Police-Free Schools. Policing in OUSD schools dehumanizes Black and brown students in our schools just as it does in the streets. It pushes young people away from education and opportunity, and toward increasing contact with the criminal system. Our schools should be a place of learning for youth where we prevent conflict through school counselors, not law enforcement. This is your opportunity to take action to end discriminatory school policing and turn the District away from a long history of disproportionate harmful treatment of Black and disabled students. Vote yes to pass the George Floyd Resolution as written.

    Sincerely,
    Heather Fell

The police have no role in our schools. Their presence directly supports the cradle to prison pipeline and creates an atmosphere that is not conducive to learning or safety. Police in schools disproportionately affects black and brown students and should be discontinued immediately.

Get police out of our schools, let's bring back counselors, children do not need to be under the persistent eye of law enforcement for their entire lives—it instills fear not respect, and does not make for a better society. Police in schools is the key feature of the school-prison pipeline, we need better for all of our children.

My name is Mariah Sparks, I am a librarian in East Oakland serving 640 students at Greenleaf TK-8. I am here today to urge you to vote in favor of BOP's George Floyd Resolution for defunding the police in OUSD. It is shameful as an educator that we are the only district that employ the police in our region. Students are calling for police-free schools, and the funds for police be funneled into direct student services. RJ, psychologists, counselors, librarians and libraries and other direct services. Students have spoken, we must listen. Sakej Henderson said, "To truly listen is to risk being changed forever." Thank you for your time.

I am an Oakland resident in full support of the student-driven initiative to remove police from OUSD. Police, policing, and the criminal system do not belong in schools and actively perpetuate racism and harm students, especially Black and Brown students. Students and faculty will be safer without a police presence and with more investment in onsite social services, restorative justice efforts, and mental health resources.

As a member of the Oakland community working who works with young people, I strongly support the George Floyd Resolution to eliminate the Oakland School Police Department. There are strong alternatives to policing that can create safe environments for the young people of OUSD. The 2 millions dollars funneled yearly into police presence would better be spent on social workers, mental health counseling, and other forms of support for Oakland youth. Normalizing policing in predominantly black and brown communities at such a young age reinforces systematic violence against those communities. Please, follow the lead of grassroots organizers who have been calling for this for years.

Pass the George Floyd Resolution to Eliminate the Oakland Schools Police Department without amendment. It's long past time to use district resources to provide students with what they really need: counselors, small classes, many student supports, quality and safe facilities, and much more. Students don't need police in their schools.
