I.-1 20-1335 Adoption by the Board of Education of Resolution No. 1920-0260 - George Floyd Resolution to Eliminate the Oakland Schools Police Department.
Police only have a negative impact on students in schools. Take them out. Utilize trauma and racial-justice informed services that actually bolster the well-being of students.
I strongly support this resolution and want to see the defunding of police, especially in the setting of school/children - let's not criminalize juveniles! We can find better ways to support kids and can put our funding into mental health, higher pay for teachers and counselors!
PLease support the BOP resolution. No changes or amendments. No cops in schools. The police have made it -very- clear that they are not invested in laws or the constitution, or protecting or serving. Which y'know, poses a certain problem if we want those things.
Please vote YES on the George Floyd Resolution to get police out of schools, without any amendments! Children in school should be able to focus on learning without having to worry about being harmed by police. Defund the police, and instead use the funding for student mental health resources and programs that provide training for district staff to more thoroughly learn about trauma-informed interventions that move more toward disrupting cycles of trauma instead of reinforcing them, which is the effect that police in schools has on students.
As a resident of Oakland and parent of a student at an OUSD School, I wholeheartedly support this resolution.
We need the Oakland Police Dept. OUT of SCHOOLS Now! There is no reason their presence should be in the school environment.
Thank you, Kelly Ording
As a resident of Oakland, a mental health therapist working at Fruitvale Elementary through Lincoln Families, and a prior special education teacher at Fremont High School, I have witnessed the harm and trauma caused by police presence in OUSD schools for the past eight years. I demand that you approve Black Organizing Projects, "George Floyd Resolution" and completely disband and defund the Oakland Schools Police Department in order to divert funds into mental health and wellness programs. We will be watching as a community that the adoption of this resolution does not involve further involvement with the police department. I also want to uplift the necessary ongoing anti-racist and implicit bias training that is necessary for all OUSD employees and contracted partners to participate in. This should not be a one time training, but ongoing work groups, since we all know that the unlearning of a white supremacist mindset is a lifelong one!
The police have lost the community’s trust, and by maintaining the police in our schools, the school system risks losing their trust as well. Take this as an opportunity to rebuild the relationship between our education system and the community. Use your platform to directly combat institutional racism in Oakland Unified School District. OUSD is faced with $16 million in potential, painful cuts. The district spends over $2.3 million annually on school police and an additional $4+ million on other security personnel, all of which contributes to an overly criminalizing and punitive school discipline climate. I am asking you to make the painless decision to terminate the Oakland School Police contract in solidarity with the Black Organizing Project.
I demand that you approve the george floyd resolution as is. Police have no place in schools. We must defund the school police and invest in social workers and other essential supports. Black students deserve safety in their educational spaces. This cannot happen until police are out of schools.
As a public school teacher in the Bay Area I can attest to the need for more services to meet the social emotional needs of the students from those who are professionally trained to offer this type of support. We do not need police on campus. In this moment we need more resources and greater incentives to hire and keep educators and staff who are equipped to do this work.
My son said dont remove the police at the school
