I.-1 20-1335 Adoption by the Board of Education of Resolution No. 1920-0260 - George Floyd Resolution to Eliminate the Oakland Schools Police Department.
I strongly support this resolution to remove police from schools. Invest in education, learning, support services, mental health, counseling and more instead of armed police that clearly show a lack of regard for the safety of black and brown children and adults. Create conditions for students to flourish and invest in their futures by removing police from their schools!
I am writing, as an Oakland resident, to support the elimination of the Oakland Schools Police Department. Our students need support services, not control services. The funding for the police department would be better used to fund counselors, nurses, educators and culturally responsive programming. Our students deserve to feel safe every time they walk in to our schools, and our families do too.
As a pediatrician I urge every School Board Member to stand with Black Organizing Project and immediately vote yes on this unprecedented and pathbreaking resolution to eliminate Oakland’s School Police Department. I ask you to:
● Support the resolution as it currently stands
● Support police free schools
● No hybrid models or substitutes for OSPD
In doing so, you will support a movement against an increasingly toxic climate--inside and outside the classroom--that pushes Black families out of schools and makes it impossible for them to remain in their communities within increased housing costs and gentrification development schemes. And you will join a growing list of school districts—from Toronto to Minneapolis to Portland and Pomona—that are eliminating school police in order to invest in student well-being, safety, and equity.
I'm a long-time Oakland resident and voter who is voicing my support of the Black Organizing Project and the adoption of the George Floyd Resolution without amendments. Serving as an OUSD board member is a hard, thankless job, and I know you all wouldn't take it on unless you cared deeply about the most vulnerable kids in Oakland. Let's protect our Black and Brown students by taking police out of schools, and re-investing funding to support their learning and safety.
As an Oakland resident of 12 years who hopes to send a kid to school in Oakland one day, I am deeply inspired by the leadership of the Black Organizing Project and fully support their resolution to remove the Oakland Schools Police Department from Oakland schools. Black youth and other youth of color, their families, and our extended communities have suffered grave harm after decades of over-policing. Our students need support with navigating food, housing, and transportation security; health care including robust mental health services; and support through mentoring, career training, and conflict resolution skills, to name a few. Let us invest n Black and Brown futures, now and always.
If we truly want to break the school-to-prison pipeline, we must begin by limiting contact between students and police officers. Schools should be a safe space where discipline can be handled in an age appropriate way without resorting to criminalization. Please remove the OUSD police department, and disallow OPD from arresting students on school grounds.
I've been providing mental health services for OUSD students for 30 years, first as a therapist and now as a Regional Executive Director for Seneca Family of Agencies. I believe that police presence in schools leads to criminalization of behavior that would be better addressed through restorative and supportive practices.
I am an alum of the Oakland Public schools and I am in strong support of the Black Organizing Project and the adoption of the George Floyd Resolution without amendments. Eliminate the OUSD police department and re-invest the funds in programs that help to eliminate the school to prison pipeline. Students need better education in Oakland not to be policed while learning.
I am a parent of two school aged children in District 6 and have lived in Oakland for 20 years. I fully support the George Floyd Resolution, and strongly urge you to vote yes and adopt the resolution as is, with no revisions. The Oakland School Police Force has demonstrated itself to be a racist institution. Regardless of intent, it impacts Black children in OUSD disproportionately and negatively, creating and perpetuating racial inequity. Removing the police presence in Oakland Schools will ultimately make all of our students more safe. In this moment, Oakland must take a bold step towards eliminating this piece of the racist structures that children growing up here endure. OUSD needs to put money into supportive programs that give students the support they need to learn safely. Please pass this resolution.
I am an Oakland resident and and an OUSD parent and I strongly support the Black Organizing Project and the adoption of the George Floyd Resolution without amendments. Eliminate the OUSD police department and re-invest the funds in to programs and personnel that support OUSD students.
As a community college instructor, I strongly believe that police officers do not belong in schools. They are not trained as educators and their presence criminalizes young people whose behavioral problems should be addressed by professional teachers and counselors. The Oakland Police Department also showed that they cannot be trusted around young people due to their lack of consequences around the officers who had sexual relations with an underaged girl. The racism of the OPD also marginalizes and endangers students of color in our schools.
I fully support Black Organizing Project's George Floyd Resolution for police free schools with absolutely no amendments. The students and teachers deserve and need a safe environment to flourish. Vote yes!
As an Oakland resident and supporter of the Black Organizing Project, I wholeheartedly support this resolution with NO amendments and urge you to pass it today. Our children deserve visionary leadership. Our communities deserve better services and support.

As a long time Oakland resident, I demand that you pass Black Organizing Project's George Floyd Resolution with NO amendments: take OPD out of OUSD and stop the school to prison pipeline. Instead, reinvest in student support programs.

I stand with Black Organizing Project- cops have no place on campuses, policing will not 'fix' youth behavior. Invest in care and educational resources.
As a Peralta parent, I am in solidarity with the Black Organizing Project and their call for #PoliceFreeSchools. The time for thinking, considering, evaluating, and studying is done. The time for action is now. I am asking you to vote “Yes” on the George Floyd Resolution for Police Free Schools as written, with no amendments or revisions, no “hybrid” model and with a community driven process which does not include police at the table.
As an Oakland native and OUSD teacher for 36 years, it is imperative that you pass the resolution, as is, tonight. Your opportunity for gradualism was lost by your refusal to authentically engage with BOP for TEN YEARS. It is astounding to me that, as representatives of Oakland, you have not taken the lead in the country on removing police from our schools. But it is time, now, to meet the moment. Do the right thing.

Get rid of police in our schools, NOW! Do the right thing.
