Hello - I strongly support this initiative, the police have no place in our schools. Teachers are consistently forced to spend their own money to purchase school supplies, and there are not enough teachers and mental health professionals to support the students. Remove the police from OUSD. Thank you.

As a parent of 2 kids who attended OUSD from K-12, and an ongoing contributor to the fundraising auctions for Oakland Tech High School, I urge the Board to end the OUSD Police program. Instead, please dedicate the funds saved to expand programs such as: restorative justice, mindfulness education in K-12, conflict resolution, counseling, and medical, nutritional and & social services. I am an Oakland resident and I stand with students, teachers, counselors, parents, and the Black Organizing Project to remove OPD from our schools! Schools are places of learning, not prisons. We need to invest those funds in social workers that provide real material support to our youth and not treat our students like future criminals.

I stand with Black Organizing Project and support the People’s Plan for Police Free Schools and the George Floyd Resolution as is, with no amendments. I ask you to vote in favor of the resolution and eliminate the OUSD School Police Department. We must immediately divest from school policing and restructure/rehouse the role of SSOs under behavioral health.
We must reinvest the 2.3m+ of OSPD budget into hiring Additional School Mental & Behavioral Health and Special Education Staff and establish a Community Oversight Committee.

I am an educator and OUSD parent. I strongly urge you to vote in favor of the George Floyd Resolution to Eliminate the Oakland Schools Police Department. OUSD's slogan is "Every Student Thrives". Our children need therapists, restorative justice counselors, nurses, and PE teachers to thrive. Not police patrolling the halls.

Hi! I am a current resident of Oakland and was raised in Berkeley/El Cerrito. I am writing to urge you to SUPPORT Black Organizing Project's George Floyd Resolution without amendments! I have personally seen the negative effects that Police have in schools. BOP's plan outlines a clear path towards creating a police free environment that will ensure the success of the students in Oakland. Eliminate the OUSD police department and re-invest the funds in to programs and personnel that support OUSD students.

I am an resident of Oakland's District 1 and I strongly urge the Board passes this resolution with no amendments. Police have no place in our schools! Why do we continue to pour our limited, precious public dollars into police that terrorize our students and residents? The people are mobilized and we are watching closely.

As a community college educator and parent of an Oakland School for the Arts graduate, I am in full support of removing the police from the schools. Policing doesn't belong on school campuses nor does it belong in the classroom. Schools are places of learning, and we cannot allow those without the relevant education in schools policing young people--policing is not education. Fund the schools not the police; fund school mental health programs; fund IEP programs; hire more faculty, staff, and administrators of color, and lower the classroom size. These are just a few of the programs that could help minimize the need for discipline issues without policing.

As a social worker who works with Oakland youth, I fully support the Black Organizing Project’s George Floyd resolution for police-free schools in Oakland - not a watered down or modified version. Cops in schools do not make students safer and increase the criminalization of Black and brown youth disproportionally. Meanwhile, most students don’t have access to mental health support because the schools have more cops than counselors and teachers have to strike for pay raises when they are the ones doing the most! Youth need support to grow and learn, and being pushed into the criminal “justice” system. Listen to your students. Listen to the data. Listen to the public demanding for police-free schools!

Children need support and to have their needs met—not to be terrified of going to a place that helps them cultivate for their future! Cops shouldn’t be in an education or children’s environment. Nurses, social workers, school counselors, and well paid teacher should! Let’s use that budget to take care of and support children!

I teach at Skyline. I have seen it all. But never have I seen an incident that would have been better handled by a cop. They are ineffective and harmful. They must be eliminated. Care managers, counselors, and teachers keep our school safe. I wrote a long article synthesizing research and analysis supporting this position. I hope it informs your vote. https://link.medium.com/V1kQGPIsA7

As a current OUSD Middle School Counselor and COST coordinator, I urge every School Board Member to stand with Black Organizing Project to vote yes on the resolution to eliminate Oakland’s School Police Department and move towards police free schools. As a school staff member who works with students experiencing mental health difficulties, I have witnessed how having police be our crisis responders can be traumatizing to youth, as police do not have the skills and training to respond to these incidents. Remove police from schools and reinvest in social workers and trained mental health professionals.

As an OUSD Teacher and constituent I ask for you to vote yes on this resolution with no amendments. Your community is calling for the abolishment of the school PD, cutting all ties with OPD and re imagining with school safety looks like. This should be real change not reform or re branding of the police force.

I am an OUSD D2 resident/parent and university educator in the subject of violence and its transformation. I strongly support the long overdue elimination of policing in our schools. I wholeheartedly insist on the passage of the George Floyd resolution with no amendments. I am grateful to the leadership of the Black Organizing Project moving us forward with a vision for police-free schools where young people can rise to be their best selves and to receive the best education and support that OUSD can offer so that we may brilliantly nurture the next generations of leaders in this Town. My research documents the profound impact of police sexual harassment, intimidation and assaults on our youth and the ripple effects on their communities. Let us witness the violence of policing no more. We can do better. We can save lives. Our task is to teach, to care for, to nurture and honor our children. Adopt the George Floyd resolution with no amendments!

We demand that the school board ELIMINATE the Oakland School Police Department, CANCEL contracts with OPD and other law enforcement agencies in OUSD, and PASS the George Floyd Resolution with no amendments.
