25-1381 Adoption by Board of Education of Resolution No. 2425-0243 - Repealing - Resolution No. 2425-0084 - Directing Alternative Budget Adjustments For SY 24-25, 25-26 & 26-27 (Legislative File Id 25-0492, Enactment No. 25-0600, March 26, 2025).
I join youth, families, educators, and community members in urging you to reverse the harmful cuts to OUSD’s vital after-school programs.
As a former OUSD teacher and principal, I witnessed firsthand the academic, creative, and social benefits these programs provide. Our after-school staff foster culturally responsive, nurturing environments that support whole-child development and engage families meaningfully.
As a father of a 1st grader who has participated in after-school programs since TK, I’m deeply grateful for the care and learning offered. My daughter often wants to “stay a little longer,” even after a full day.
Eliminating these programs would harm families—especially those facing financial hardship—who depend on extended care. Cuts would disproportionately affect Black and Brown students and could even forfeit state funding without generating savings.
Please restore full funding. Our students and communities deserve better.
I am a very concerned Oakland parent.
Board Resolution #25-0492 threatens the future of education equity and access in Oakland.
Please act with your peers to rescind this resolution and to restore full funding for after-school programs across OUSD.
Families cannot send their children to OUSD schools unless they have reliable, quality care for the full day. Oakland parents already fight to stay safe and keep our kids educated by living here. This measure makes absolutely no sense, either from a budgetary move or motivated in any way by good faith with your community.
Please do not let this happen on your watch. Schools where parents can rely on quality care for their children all day are the backbone of thriving, prosperous, progressive communities.
This devastating cut to a critical *already funded* service doesn’t have to happen! Please rescind this destructive resolution and let Oakland parents keep our kids in OUSD!
I understand that making a budget is multi-step and complicated, but this process has been wasteful in terms of time and good-will. You all should be investing your time and collaboration into the 3 R's process, which would allow for thoughtful discussion, planning ahead, and crafting a shared vision that can guide future actions. Instead, you all are arguing on the dais and online, rushing to pass resolutions without full support or understanding, and needing to reverse course.
Please work together (with each other, with labor partners, with the community, with staff) to craft a vision for the future of OUSD. You board directors should be leading this process and modeling collaborative leadership
