No school closures, Cancel the Debt! Every School Board member knows that the State Administrators tripled the debt, outsourced jobs and piled on high paying administrators. That tripling must be canceled outright and so too the original $37m debt because the schools have been underfunded for years. Sam Davis--you know that the closing of Shands and the Clinton Park complex decimated Adult Education. Stop talking about the "benefits" of consolidation providing for more resources. Fight for canceling the debts so small schools and small class sizes can be maintained. And then the entire Board should take on Shorenstein who owns City Center and Fisher who is trying to own the Port, neither of whose properties pay a single penny directly to support the schools. As to Gary Yee, he surrendered public education to his corporate overlords more than a decade ago, telling his own daughter to abandon teaching as a lifetime profession. OEA-ILWU stand together to fight privatization.
I support postponing school closures and mergers, as an interim measure, but oppose any closures or mergers in the first place. There is more than enough money in this state and in this area to make all our schools amazing, not just barely staying open. Let’s make that happen.
I'm an OUSD parent. Please postpone the closures. Give this time to complete the equity analysis and to listen to OUSD students, educators and families.
I support the amendment to postpone closures at Community Day School and Parker, and the truncation at La Escuelita. But I also demand the following:
1. That OUSD move forward with an Equity Impact Analysis of the final, amended list of closures; and
2. That OUSD conduct a fiscal analysis of the revised plans for closures and truncations.
This closure process - and its amendments - have been chaotic, non-strategic, and problematic from start to finish. Pushing back these closures and the truncation means there is time for the District to study the equity and fiscal impact of these changes, and determine whether they are truly worth the community cost. Please address the larger issues of this crises with comprehensive and strategic planning that keeps equity at the center of final decisions.
My name is Annie Banks And I am a parent in Brookfield Village and an organizer with the Anti Police-Terror Project. I support the resolution to postpone the closures, and the demands of the Reparations for Black Students campaign and the hunger strikers. No cuts, no closures!
I support that you postpone your closure plan, and then decide not to close schools at all. I support my comrades at Westlake Middle School on hunger strike. I support Oakland students and their families. And I support Eng, Yee, Gonzales, and Thompson in moving far far away so we never have to see their faces again.
I support postponing closing majority Black Schools in OUSD. I support NO SCHOOL CLOSURES in OUSD when attempting to balance the budget deficit. I support OUD not balancing the budget on the backs of Black Students!
My name is Kate Persons and I am a core leader for the reparations for black students campaign. I support the resolution to postpone the closures. The board needs to do better. An equity analysis and community engagement are the very least of what Oakland's black students deserve. Please do your jobs, you serve the community.
