I support the resolution to postpone school closures because I'm against school closures, and think this is a particularly poor time to close more schools. School closures harm the most disadvantaged students. Postponing closures is the right thing to do at this time.

Reiterating support for this resolution as expressed in the joint letter from leaders of Californians for Justice, Faith in Action East Bay and Public Advocates submitted to the board on August 24, 2021. As we wrote in that letter:
"Our whole OUSD community must be united around ensuring our kids, staff and families are safe so that they can experience a meaningful Restorative Restart to school through this fall and beyond.... We urge the Board to adopt this Resolution and leaders at the Alameda County Office of Education and Oakland Unified School District to do everything within your power to focus on COVID safety at our sites in collaboration with students and families as key to a strong implementation of OUSD’s Restorative Restart. In addition, we expect to see an inclusive planning process for further investment of the 2021 Budget Act towards racially just and relationship-centered community schools where our young people can experience healing and joy in their learning."
I am in support of this resolution to postpone the Blueprint Cohort 3 Decision to Fall 2022. The reason is that I oppose further school closures that disproportionately impact African American students and their families and communities.

I urge to you to support Mike Hutchinson's amendment to prevent any school closures now or in the future. School closures cause great harm to students and have been shown by the district's own finances to NOT save any money.
