S.-3 20-0605 Approval by the Board of Education of a Charter School Facilities Agreement between District and Aspire Public Schools, Inc., a California non-profit public benefit corporation ("Aspire") operating Aspire Berkeley Maynard Academy (the nonprofit corporation and the Berkley Maynard Academy, for use of the facilities (formerly Golden Gate Elementary School) located at 6200 San Pablo Avenue, Oakland, CA 94608-2228, for a term of fifteen (15) consecutive fiscal years, commencing on July 1, 2020 and ending on June 30, 2035, subject to earlier termination as set forth in this Agreement ("Initial Term"), for annual rent as set forth in Section 3 of Agreement.
I fully support the facilities agreement for Aspire Berkley Maynard Academy. BMA is a neighborhood school that creates a loving and joyful learning community for all families. Recently, BMA received recognition for successfully serving Black and Brown students. The school community needs and deserves a facility to continue their academic rigorous program and supportive social emotional learning.
• BMA is successfully serving Black & Brown students
• BMA provides families with choice, equity and access to high quality education
• BMA students deserve a facility that is reflective of their potential and ability to succeed in our world
I am absolutely opposed to this lease agreement. If charter schools are allowed to use PUBLIC school properties, then they should PAY market rate. To close a public school, only to allow a charter eventually to move in, is unethical and one of the key steps in destroying public education in Oakland,
I am writing to support BMA. The school is an amazing space for students and creates incredible opportunities above and beyond. Teachers and leaders have worked tireless to create a community that supports every single member. Therefore, BMA students deserve a facility that is reflective of their potential and ability to succeed in our world. Just imagine what every Oakland scholar deserves!
I’m a Mom of 4 BMA kids 2 of them continue in BMA and 2 have already graduated and I support the Charter School Facilities Agreement for Aspire Berkeley Maynard Academy.
I support the Charter School Facilities Agreement for Aspire Berkeley Maynard Academy. As the Director of Student Services for Aspire Bay Area AND as a parent of a BMA scholar, this school means the world to my daughter and family. The charter for BMA was unanimously approved in Dec 2019 by the OUSD Board of Directors and the site should remain in operation to ensure Black and Brown scholars can continue to thrive in an Oakland school.
I manage a reading program called Reading Partners at Berkley Maynard Academy. We have 55 BMA scholars enrolled in our program and 54 volunteer tutors. For the past two years we have run our reading program out of a nook in the hallway, because there is not enough up-to-code classroom space for us to use. Our situation is not the optimal environment for scholars who are learning to read, because the hallway is noisy and can get very cold. This agreement would help us open up more up-to-code space for us at the school, so our scholars can have a safe and quiet environment where they can develop their reading skills.
I am a neighbor of Berkeley Maynard Academy. The amount of support BMA gives its students and the surrounding community is unlike any other. The focus on community engagement is unparalleled. As a community member, I notice the amount of partnership BMA has with the neighboring Recreation Centers and it has a great after-school program. The level of care and support given to the Black and Brown community is needed, welcomed and noticed in the community it served. Because of this, I am in support BMA's facility renewal.
Signing a 40year lease at this time of crisis should not happen. Please do not agree to this. Please rejecting or postponing this lease. The state's economic situation is likely to get much worse over the coming year as the virus's repercussions continue, and that will impact our schools. During a recession, the state will makes cuts, any funding sent to schools under one program is likely to mean larger cuts under another program.
I am writing in support of Prop 51 for Berkeley Maynard Academy. In January 2020, BMA received a unanimous vote from the board for a 5 year charter renewal. We take pride in our commitment to serve both OUSD, students and families who have deep roots and ties to both the city of Oakland and our district. We especially take pride in providing high expectations, high quality instruction and opportunities for our students where half of our scholars are African American. BMA has received national recognition due to our intentional, strategic focus from an equally diverse staff to provide consistent, and exceptional education experiences for our scholars. Our students, teachers, staff, and community deserve a facility that is a reflection of their potential, hard work, and ability to succeed in an every changing world. We deeply appreciate your ongoing support of BMA and our schools as we continue to provide high quality instruction, quality, and our students, for many years to come.
I support the Charter School Facilities Agreement for Aspire Berkeley Maynard Academy. BMA has received national recognition for the amazing work that they do for African American and Latinx students. Families deserve choice, equity, and access to high quality education. The students of BMA deserve a space where they continue to grow and thrive.

Staff highlighted strong performance among several key student groups: African American students, Latinx students, economically disadvantaged students, and students

I support the Charter School Facilities Agreement for Aspire Berkley Maynard Academy. Recently, BMA had their charter renewed unanimously by the Board, as well as, received the Top Schools Award from Innovate Public Schools as a school who is changing outcomes for both African American and Latinx scholars. BMA has been a staple in their community since 2005 with long standing generation ties. The school continues to serve African American students, Latinx students, economically disadvantaged students, and students with disabilities well. The student, family, and staff stakeholder groups have all praised student engagement, family & community partnerships, and longevity in Oakland. As a founding teacher of BMA and long-standing member of their community, I support this agreement.
I support the Charter School Facilities Agreement for Berkeley Maynard Academy. BMA is an excellent school for Black and Brown students as national recognitions continue to show.
BMA has strong generational
ties with the Oakland community. As a teacher at BMA I believe that students deserve a space that reflects their potential so that they can continue to be served to achieve their highest potential.
I agree with the points made by Kim Davis, Sam Davis, and Shona Armstrong -- these leases need to be redrafted with care so that they best serve the needs of all Oakland public school students, now and in the future.
I support the Charter School Facilities Agreement for Aspire Berkeley Maynard Academy. The charter for BMA was unanimously approved in Dec 2019 by the OUSD Board of Directors. At that time, OUSD staff noted the BMA outperformed at least half of its comparison schools in both
ELA and Math in both elementary and middle school for nearly all years of the previous charter term. Staff highlighted strong performance among several key student groups: African American students, Latinx students, economically disadvantaged students, and students
with disabilities (in past two years). Staff also praised strong family partnerships and engagement.
Given the massive financial uncertainty of our current times (at the school, district, city, state, and national levels) it is unseemly to enter into any sort of agreements that tie the hands of all involved for years to come. Please reject or postpone this vote.

This is not a time to be making long-term decisions. It's undemocratic.
