Los Angeles Unified has already implemented a comprehensive screen policy district-wide, going beyond guidelines to enforceable limits on devices during school hours. Many research studies link excessive classroom screen time to lower achievement, anxiety, depression, and reduced attention span; soft, qualitative crowd wisdom and experience points to the same.
This resolution is well thought out, with a reasonable and concrete timeline, and I urge the board to support it, and continue working in this direction.

We limit our elementary school-aged child's screen time at home, as recommended by his pediatrician and research. I know that screen time in the class isn't consistently high, and there are less harmful uses (eg listening to audiobooks), but I have been shocked to hear about the high usage of screens for "choice time," especially when the screen time is used for addictive, game-type, apps.
Please pass this resolution and support our teachers to reduce non-essential screen time.
I'm supportive of this as a parent who works in technology and actively limits my children's screen time. Even though there are many educational documentaries and books we read online, we've reinforced paper books at home this year more than ever. There should be limited screen time at schools.

The district must show data that screen use at this age, and these specific programs, support learning and social development. Kids learn best in relationship with attuned teachers, not screens. I'm also concerned devices sometimes give teachers a break or manage instructional demands. I don't believe iReady offers meaningful educational value, a decision grounded in research on both its effectiveness and its impact on kids' well-being. I've opted my children out of iReady and Sown to Grow.
