G.-5 24-2552 A discussion and possible Adoption by the Board of Education, upon recommendation by the Facilities Committee of Resolution No. 2425-0184 - Re Prioritization - Measure Y General Obligation Bond Funds - Water Lead Issues and Reserve.
I attended both Elmhurst Jr High and Skyline High. I OPPOSE the proposal. Both schools need the improvements. Also, why are you trying to mess around with the voice of the voters.
I'm an alumni of Skyline and I continue to donate my time to serve the kids at skyline as a member of the community. I've had children that go there and I have family and friends that work there. This is pretty disgusting that the board would seek to repurpose funds that we voted on. These funds have an allocation for necessary safety improvements to the school. Necessary, I've known some folks injured from the failing physical plant. This is a ridiculous request. Completely oppose this.
Keep resources needed to maintain and upgrade Skyline High’s infrastructure please! It’s our neighborhood school and we are planning on sending our 8th grader to Skyline this fall.
OUSD MUST NOT repurpose Skyline's Measure Y funds ($10 million) for lead abatement. I have been an OUSD parent since 2009. Skyline high school is in disrepair. For decades, facilities has put on "bandaids" but has not fixed the fundamental problems. The bathrooms are deplorable and classroom ceilings are falling in with rains. Skyline High School was allotted 10 MILLION dollars - and deserves these funds. We must begin repairs so Skyline High School can stand for the future. Do not undermine the wishes of your voters. Do NOT take away Skyline Measure Y funds!!
Funding is needed to repair and remodel Skyline. I am a district parent in a neighborhood zoned for Skyline (Redwood Heights) and have heard firsthand of the repairs needed from a Skyline teacher. In addition, this was voted on by our community. Children at Skyline deserve better from OUSD.
I teach in D6 and vote in D7. I am an 11 year teacher at Skyline. Our facilities have continuously deteriorated over the last 11 years. Many promises have been made and broken to invest in our campus. Please reconsider this harmful proposal and invest in the modernization of our campus facilities. Our students deserve better!
I strongly oppose reallocating these funds. I have been a Skyline parent for 5 years and our facilities desperately need upgrades that these funds will begin to address. Our kids deserve clean bathrooms and these funds were voted in by our community.
This money is needed to improve our facilities and should be used as intended at Skyline and Elmhurst. We have a vibrant active student population that deserve clean modern bathrooms. They should not be "reprioritized". I am a teacher at Skyline.
The measure Y funds were voted on and passed under the premise that they would be used to make campus and facilities improvements at Skyline and Elmhurst. The students and community are counting on the proper use of these funds. Lead abatement across OUSD is of the utmost importance but do not let mismanagement of funds take away from our other students. We need updates desperately at skyline and I am still holding hope that my current sophomore will be able to witness those improvements and that they will be done in a timely manner. All students deserve to feel like we are investing in them and that each of them matter.
I am a parent in Oakland. I support this and hope that funding for Skyline remains intact. The school needs support to make much needed improvements to the campus.
I do not approve the reallocation of Measure Y funds. It is unfair to the schools who are expecting the needed and promised facility/building improvement projects.
Measure Y was voted on by the public for specific purposes, the projects have been budgeted, allocated, and planned and the communities are expecting them. To now transfer to a different purpose feels dishonest and speaks to years of mis-management of funds and will likely erode further trust with the school board's ability to hold true to commitments they have made to the community. I am proud to live in Oakland and have my children attend Oakland Public schools, but I know we can do better for our children. Stick to the original purpose of Measure Y and leave the funds where they are.
I voted yes due to the fact that the use of funds would be used properly and now hearing OUSD is trying take from the properties that was selected for funding. Working and having five of my six children attend Skyline and hearing this is a travesty. To long the funds has been misused, Skyline and Elmhurst deserve better! Leave the funds in place.
As a 50 year Alumni , the parent of two graduates and a long time stanch supporter of Skyline High School I urge the board to fund some much needed updates!
As a parent of Skyline High School student I STRONGLY urge the board not to pull funding from Skyline HS!! The facilities at the school need updating - bathrooms for example!! This is irresponsible of the board to promise the school community and voters of how they will spend the money and not follow through!! There are a lot of uses for the $10 million for Skyline. These funds can be utilized to jump start revisioning of a future Skyline. Planning,
designing and testing all take time and money. Skyline deserves this money
to start their process to be the school of the future for Oakland.
I am the parent of two students at Skyline. I am asking that OUSD ensure that my children's school receives the funding that it was promised. While everyone agrees that lead abatement is critical, OUSD should be applying for state and federal funds to address this issue. The daily experience of students at Skyline should not be less important. Please don't let them down.
I strongly urge the board to maintain the Measure Y funds for Skyline. OUSD must honor its commitment to tax payers and to its schools, including Skyline! Lead abatement is important, but it shouldn't come from this pool of much needed funding. The students at Skyline deserve and desperately need the capital improvements that Measure Y will make possible.
As a parent of three Skyline students, I urge you to uphold the Measure Y commitment and keep funds allocated to Skyline and Elmhurst. While district-wide lead abatement is vital, these schools need the promised funding to reimagine and shape their future. Skyline deserves the chance to use this investment to remain a top-tier school and provide a high-quality environment for students and teachers. Families strongly oppose the reallocation of these funds.
As a former Skyline parent and Skyline facilities chair, I'm not surprised that there are discussions around "reallocating" bond funds, but this is why the public doesn't trust OUSD to manage bond money. Don't be fooled. This proposed shifting of bond funds to “repairs”(I question the legality of this shift, we were told Measure Y is only for new construction) is nothing more than a tactical money grab to cover cost overruns on other Measure Y projects. OUSD is quick to CYA by using the optics around lead to declare “urgency”, even though the district is already allocating funds for lead abatement in future budgets, and OUSD’s own dashboard data shows that schools have clean drinking water via FloWater, filtration, and replacements of plumbing fixtures. Show some accountability, knock it off with the bait-and-switch, stop using Skyline as a political doormat and keep its bond fund allocation in place. Our community is tired of always having someone pull the football away.
