Agenda Item
R.-2 23-1754 Concurrent Approval by the Board of Education of a Charter School Facilities Agreement by and between the District and Education for Change, a California non-profit public benefit corporation ("EFC"), operating Cox Academy (the nonprofit corporation and Cox Academy are hereinafter collectively referred to as "CHARTER SCHOOL,") for use of certain facilities located at 9860 Sunnyside St., Oakland, CA 94603, for a term of four (4) consecutive fiscal years, commencing on July 1, 2024 and ending on June 30, 2028, subject to earlier termination as set forth in this Agreement ("Initial Term"), for annual rent as set forth in Section 3 of Agreement, with options to extend the FUA concurrent with the renewal of its charter petition, not to exceed a total duration of thirty?five years; and a Charter School Facilities Program Memorandum of Understanding by and between District, Education for Change on behalf of Cox Academy, and the State of California on behalf of the State Allocation Board and California School Finance Authority, for Proposition 51 School Construction Grant, for Charter School, pursuant to terms and conditions thereof, with no direct cost to the District.
I am in full support of Prop 51. ALL students and staff who support them deserve a safe environment conducive for learning. Your support will allow us to work and thrive in a healthy facility.
All Oakland students deserve quality schools. As a proud member of CTA, I hope the board members who are also in CTA honor our mission of ensuring that the human dignity and civil rights of all children, youth and adults are protected. Vote yes so students are no longer subject to leaky roofs, flooding, etc.
Vote yes, all students deserve safe learning conditions. It should not matter if they are district or charter. These funds will not come from OUSD so please don't stop Cox from getting the money we deserve.
Students and staff need a safe space to learn and work. Regardless of how I feel about charter schools it is important to have a safe space for kids and the adults who support them. I will take my personal feelings toward charter schools to a state level rather than taking issue with a legitimate facilities safety concern when it comes to serving children in Oakland.
Vote yes on Prop 51 funding and give our students and teachers what EVERY HUMAN BEING DESERVES a safe and healthy Learning environment. Our students do not deserve to be in out dated portables with umbrellas so the leaking roof does not interrupt their learning. Our teachers should not have to be forced to use a port a potty because the closest bathroom is in the main building. OAKLAND STUDENTS AND EDUCATORS deserve MORE. This is your time as a board to SUPPORT OAKLAND STUDENTS especially the severely underserved students in East Oakland.
I'm assuming the board members are granted a space to work that's free from mold, leakage, asbestos, literal mushrooms, and is most of all safe. It is outrageous how long certain board members have ignored the school staff, parents, and community's request to see this school for themselves and to vote an obvious YES to grant teachers and students the same basic workable conditions they are privileged with. The funds are separate and would not be diverted from OUSD's budget so there is no legitimate reason to be voting otherwise.
I am advocating for the approval of this agenda item. All Oakland students should have access to a safe and clean facility, especially when the state and the school is providing all the funding. This is risk free for OUSD. These funds will help Cox Academy replace a leaky roof and outdated HVAC systems, as well as addressing important seismic problems. Vote Yes to support Oakland students.
I strongly urge you to approve the much-needed funds that are integral to enhancing our school's safety, infrastructure, and overall learning environment.

All students in our public schools -- both charter and district -- deserve and are entitled to safe, clean, and well-maintained places to learn.
In favor, thank you
