22-0575 Approval by the Board of Education of Resolution No. 2122-0195 - Finding That Yu Ming Charter School Cannot Be Accommodated At A Single Site and Written Statement Of Reasoning; Adopting Issuance of Proposition 39 Facilities Offers and Directing Staff to Issue Written Final Offers in Compliance with Proposition 39. Or alternatively, Resolution No. 2122-0195A or Resolution No. 2122-0195B.
I OPOSE to proposal. There is no space for Yu Ming at Franklin Elementary or at any other OUSD school. Franklin Serves children with special needs. with two special education classes as well as several inclusion classes. We have newcomers, English learners, students who are significantly below grade level, unhoused families, and children who have endured trauma. Crowding Franklin students with a charter school is yet more trauma. Please stop.
I am a public school teacher in District 7. Do NOT co-locate this school on Brookfield campus. This proposal is undemocratic and anti-Black. No shade on the parents and families of Yu Ming, but taking this space is not fair to the Brookfield community and not something that is wanted. Additionally, this timeline disenfranchises these communities and excludes their voices. Stop privatizing public spaces.
OUSD and Yu Ming are both in a delicate situation. As Yu Ming supports students from 34 Bay Area cities, especially Alameda County, the impact will be spread across several school districts. Please pursue a mutually supportive partnership.
I don’t even know how to begin to summarize what is wrong with charter schools taking over public schools. Instead of trying I will just say I oppose the takeover of our public schools by charter schools, whether that be through the closing of schools or by squeezing them out of their space by co-location.
We are an African American family with one daughter that completed 9 years at Yu Ming and another that is in her 5th year. Our experience has been nothing short of incredible and vital for the families seeking a language immersion program. I think it's important to understand how unique Yu Ming is, as the only free public Mandarin immersion program, and how inappropriate it is to lump us into the ongoing bitter ideological conflict of charter vs. OUSD public schools. Supporting Yu Ming's survival, and not Yu Ming's demise should be the ultimate goal, as our existence is not to the detriment of OUSD or the families it serves.
Let us be clear: opposing this colocation has nothing to do with the merits of Yu Ming charter school and everything to do with protecting the rights of Black and Brown students to their schools and community spaces. The rooms on offer are IN USE--regardless of the law's technicalities, it is unconscionable to displace and disrupt students in their own schools. NO COLOCATION.
I OPPOSE to YuMing occupying Public schools taking away the Students that want to attend that particular public school Our schools need those rooms to provide another program like Art, Music, or be a room for students that need extra help to increase their studies to school grade
As an Oakland teacher who has experienced co-location with a charter school I strongly oppose co-location of any charter school. It creates a toxic work environment for both faculty and students while at the same time compromising public resources, which is later used as a reason for closures.
Some opposing comments have asked why Yu Ming can't get a private space. They've actually spent years searching for such a space, found one, and at the last minute, were denied. Last month the ACBOE denied a privately owned campus in San Leandro to Yu Ming in an unfortunate and unexpected vote that left the school in a difficult position.
No one wants any kids to suffer because the adults can't come up with a workable solution. We need to do better for all our kids.
Yu Ming has a track record of partnering with neighboring schools, teachers, and staff, and I'd expect them to approach this situation with the utmost care and consideration.
Please help Yu Ming find a new campus. Denying us a space will only serve to jeopardize access to a free quality Mandarin bilingual education for more children and families.
This is the only opportunity for our children to maintain a strong connection to their ethnic language of origin, and has deep meaning to our family.
We know these are tough times, and want to work with Oakland and OUSD to find positive solutions that work for everyone.
Our public schools need support, not charter schools. I'm sure Yu Ming does good work. HOWEVER, historically, once a charter takes over a public school, black student enrollment drastically decreases. We need to protect our black and brown students by not accepting any new charters in OUSD. Protect our students that already attend the schools that Yu Ming are trying to take over. If we want to claim that we care about our students of color, particularly black students, then we must OPPOSE all charter school co-locations and take overs.
As an Oakland public school teacher I strongly oppose the colocation of any charter school with public schools, especially in light of racist closures forcing more students into other public schools where they will need space and care to *properly* welcome not rush them through into a building that has to accommodate other students now too. Unfair and shortsighted. Vote no on colocation.
Yu Ming is an excellent school. All of us, as parent, as educators, should do everything to support great schools like Yu Ming. I wish our country would realize how important it is to increase funding for education, especially better education, instead of cutting out opportunities and options.
Like many have commented, as a Yu Ming parent and Oakland resident, I would also prefer Yu Ming to have its own campus, but the ACBOE recently denied a privately owned campus in San Leandro, and the school is simply looking for the next best option.
Should Yu Ming end up co-locating with an OUSD school, I’m confident that faculty, staff and other parents will work to create a partnership with the local community and foster an environment in which all students can thrive.
Teaching children another language, another culture shows them that all languages, cultures, people are beautiful and valuable. Growing that respect for others among kids is the best way forward for our community - we need greater appreciation for each other! Yu Ming is a great (K-8) school which serves a diverse group of kids and produces great outcomes through language immersion. Please support this school and these kids!
Yu Ming provides an incredible, FREE, education for Oakland residents and other Bay Area families. Yu Ming does an incredible job of serving all students – black/brown/white/Asian – across socioeconomic lines. Yu Ming increased its % of free and reduced lunch positions in order to increase student diversity, and the data show that ALL students who attend, including black and brown students, do exceptionally well.
There are hundreds of students on Yu Ming’s wait list. A vote for Yu Ming’s expansion is a vote to help hundreds of young kids get an incredible education. Support Oakland’s children and vote to support Yu Ming.
Hi my name is Walte Ore and as a Former Brookfield Elementary School student I am opposed to the closure of this school!!! This school means a lot to the Brookfield Villiage community and it will add an unnecessary struggle on our parents and families in the immediate area!!! This community already has it’s hardships and we don’t need an added issue for our community to struggle with!!!
It would now appear that governance by crisis is not at all something imposed on this Board from outside, but rather its preferred anti-democratic mode of conducting the public’s business. The resolution under consideration itself names “the short turnaround time from the prior board meeting,” and it’s simply egregious that board has called yet another special meeting to again consider yielding public school space to entities that siphon resources away from our public schools. How are the communities at EOP, Markham, Franklin, Prescott, Garfield, and Brookfield supposed to advocate for themselves on such short notice and when this Board continues to conduct itself in such an unaccountable, anti-democratic way?

学校的目标是教书育人。育明学校在教学和培养孩子品德上都做得很好,一个好学校的发展会让更多孩子受益。我支持育明.
Please help support these children who are also part of your community and just want to continue to attend their public school. Thank you!
