This decision is needed for the community. These days are the most prominent day of the year for hundreds of kids and their families to be together. They would meet and celebrate the important occasions. The bright side there has been many states and counties that have already made these days officially holidays as in New York and Michigin.
There many residents who support and root for this to happen in the Bay Area.
Thank you and regards
Please support this resolution to hire Arabic-speaking staff in the Enrollment Office, hire more Arabic-speaking tutors and counselors, and add two annual one-hour staff trainings/workshops regarding Yemeni and Arabic culture, and recognize and include two Muslim holidays on the OUSD calendar.
I strongly support and urge to vote for the resolution No. 2021-0155 - Supporting Yemeni Students and Families in OUSD.
Having Arabic teachers and staff and recognizing the Muslim holidays officially will implies the importance of the knowledge of Yemeni-Arab and Muslim students/societies of their cultures, heritage and language in order for them to have a greater opportunity to integrate and accept the different culture and language they have here. Better than being traumatized by confronting a totally new culture and language that differs with their source, the source of their people, and their original home which will eventually create big gap and negatively affect students performance and grades. Applying this resolution is like building a bridge between the two as a great solution for them to interact and have a better chance to merge into a new culture and language and have a healthy reaction and good results towards it. Please vote for it! Thanks
I support this resolution because as a former OUSD student, this would have been transformational in how I navigated the schooling system. It would have went a long way in supporting my family and I and many Yemeni families across the district. This resolution supports the biggest Muslim immigrant student majority in OUSD but also Muslims across ethnicities and socioeconomic status.
I teach Asian and Arab American studies at UC Davis and have been doing research on Muslim and Arab American youth for almost 20 years. My current research is on Yemeni Americans in the Bay Area and the impact of the pandemic, the Muslim Ban, and the war in Yemen on the community. Yemeni American students have struggled with virtual schooling as many families did not have technological access and literacy, language fluency, and time to support their children navigate Zoom schooling. Given the worrying statistics on Yemeni American student achievement are worrying, this is a dire situation. Clearly resources are needed to make sure this segment of our Oakland community does not continue to fall between the cracks. As a parent of an OUSD student in an Arab/Asian American family, I hope that OUSD can build on these statements by investing actual resources in supporting the community and honoring their contributions to Oakland.
I'm a Yemeni-American father and resident of Oakland. I urge the board to approve this resolution to improve the academic, social and emotional well-being of students of Yemeni descent. As the number of Yemeni students in OUSD continues to grow its important the district takes a proactive approach to support them.
I am in support of Yemani students and families cultural and religious freedom and recognition.
