Lighthouse K-8 is part of a K-12 model and vision for student-centered learning that delivers results for students and families on their journey to college and career of choice and becoming changemakers in our community. Every member of our community is deeply committed to our mission and vision and is working hard to realize that mission every day, especially as we strive to offer quality education within a pandemic. We should be renewed now to allow our students, families, and staff the continued ability to work together to ensure a high quality public school option for East Oakland families for the next five years.

Lighthouse Community Charter School is a beacon for public education in Oakland. Supporting students for 13 years as they prepare for college and a meaningful career of their choice, Lighthouse stands out as an exceptional public school option for students and their families. Lighthouse should absolutely be renewed for the next 5 years!

LCPS is a leader in the charter community, having served Oakland students and families since 2002. Lighthouse K-8 is the first leg on a K-12 journey that has consistently graduating college bound classes of seniors since 2009, whose students are graduating from college at rates 4x the national average. Lighthouse's impact speaks for itself and Lighthouse deserves another charter term.

I have worked in a variety of educational settings with diverse populations, with Black and Latino children making up a majority. This is my first experience in which the encouragement and support to help these students rise and succeed has been so thoroughly addressed across the spectrum of school function: the mission and philosophy, administration of leadership across all roles at the school, a culture of intentional and constant learning, and daily effort and follow-through all point to the urgency with which we are lead and supported to do the daily work with our students, in whatever role we play, in collaboration with each other. This is driven home in our trainings, conversations, and is shown by example consistently. This sturcture and environment sets up our students to get the most from us, and for us to receive them and everything they have to offer, every day. I energetically support the Lighthouse community and this charter renewal for another 5 years!

Lighthouse has worked hard to be granted a 5-year renewal of its charter. The school is committed to listening to family input, improving outcomes for all students, and delivering high-quality instruction that is developmentally appropriate for each student. We are excited to build on our strengths and be pushed to grow in the areas that need more special attention.

We love lighthouse because of its diversity and community. My daughter came to kindergarten without knowing a lot academically but thanks to the patient and dedication of its teachers my daughter has been an excellent student. She is now in 2nd grade. I am really grateful of how Lighthouse has been handling this distance learning.

I have a 4th grader at Lighthouse Community Charter School. He has attended since Kindergarten and is well known by everyone.. The Lighthouse family has accepted us as their own and has helped out tremendously when the situation called for it. I am requesting that the charter be renewed for another 5 years so that Lighthouse can continue to assist the families in the community by providing the very best education.

My son has attended other publicly funded schools in Oakland. He's been at Lodestar for 3 years - never been happier socially and academically - a multi-ethnic child, he feels totally accepted at Lodestar. His grades and test scores have gone up each year at Lodestar and now he's a consistently good student. Staff increasingly come from the same ethnic communities as students - his least experienced teacher has 14 years experience. Core values of love, social justice, community and agency are evident in every aspect of how the school functions. Lodestar pivoted fast with creative solutions for long distance learning. Despite the innate drawbacks, they do an amazing job - never satisfied with good enough, they continue to work to improve consistently involving families in all processes. Lodestar is at the forefront of supporting families academically, technologically and in community. Most families are low income, many ESL, nearly all BIPOC. This is an incredible school.

I am a founding parent of a Lodestar Charter School student. I am thankful for the relationships my son has gained over the years. He has a bond with not only his peers but his teachers and other Lodestar staff. “It takes a village to raise a child.” Lodestar has been that village for my son and family. Teachers and staff are always willing to go above and beyond to support him academically, socially and emotionally. One support that Lodestar has, which has worked well for my son, is math or reading groups that are rigorous and challenge him. From his experience, he said he likes Lodestar because the school is welcoming, helpful, lets you use technology to work independently and they teach you where you can understand. Lodestar has done right by our family and we fully support the charter renewal.

Lighthouse/Lodestar is an overall good school. The Middle school has GREAT leaders and teachers. The Elementary has a lot to work on for its African American population (often felt invisible there) and how they respond to bullying. I would love to see the entire Lighthouse community comes together to stand against bullying, be inclusive of its African American population and promote a quality education for all once renewed.
