X.-1 20-1335 Adoption by the Board of Education of Resolution No. 1920-0260 - George Floyd Resolution to Eliminate the Oakland Schools Police Department
As a middle school teacher at Elmhurst United Middle School, I strongly support the resolution to eliminate police in OUSD schools. Our students should not be criminalized for behaviors that can be addressed with Transformative Justice teams, mental health support, and other additional school resources. Considering that the district is consistently underfunded, it seems criminal to spend district money on police in schools rather than the myriad of other resources that our students and teachers deserve.
I saw this item was deleted and then added back. There was 150 comments of support for this before it was deleted. If this was an attempt to silence the people, then it is shameful and disgraceful.
I strongly support this motion to remove OPD from Oakland Schools. We need to let kids be kids and not criminalize them which has been proven to fuel the school to prison pipeline which is all too common. The money spent on this would be so much better spent on paying teachers more, reducing class sizes, hiring school nurses and social workers, and working to solve inequities across Oakland.
I SUPPORT the resolution to eliminate the Oakland Schools Police Department. I have been a high school teacher for four years and I can tell you that the cops do not help! A police officer brings a loaded gun to any conversation; the result is escalation, antagonism, and disproportionate consequences. Students and schools are much better served by restorative internal processes that work to keep students engaged with their school communities and to repair harms.
Particularly at this time when the police have shown a violent disregard for Black lives, I don't think it's humane to require children to go to schools where police are present. School should be a place of freedom, not a stepping stone towards incarceration.
I fully support eliminating the Oakland schools police department.

Not sure where the other 80+ comments went that supported this resolution, but we need to remove OSPD and divert those funds to services that actually impact students positively.
As a resident of Oakland, I strongly urge you to approve the George Floyd Resolution to Eliminate the Oakland Schools Police Department
All children have a right to learn in a safe and secure environment, free of violence and coercion. The mere presence of police officers on school campuses foreclosures on this possibility. The mere presence of police stigmatizes Black and Brown students, treating them as prospective criminals. This has been unacceptable going back years and is even more so now.
