X.-1 20-1335 Adoption by the Board of Education of Resolution No. 1920-0260 - George Floyd Resolution to Eliminate the Oakland Schools Police Department
I strongly support this resolution. Use school funding for staffing programs, services, and resources that support student learning, participation, inclusion, health, and safety. Policing cannot solve the problems in our schools.
I, as well as other Oakland Unified School District teachers and staff, stand with the Black Organizing Project to urge the board to SUPPORT THE GEORGE FLOYD RESOLUTION TO ELIMINATE OAKLAND SCHOOLS POLICE DEPARTMENT and DEFUND POLICE IN THE OAKLAND SCHOOL DISTRICT. This funding should be allocated to increase resources around restorative justice, counseling, career opportunity, educational and emotional support. Please consider the future, safety, and security of our students and DEFUND POLICE IN OUSD!

I strongly stand in support of the George Floyd Resolution. I am a volunteer in OUSD and with the Oakland Public Library giving story times to Head Start children. I believe in OUSD children. Let's send them the right message. Let's support them, and support what they need.
I support the George Floyd Resolution for Police Free Schools. Going to Oakland youth deserve better education system with wrap around services to ensure a healthy learning environment!
Support the resolution. I have two OUSD students and another about to start. Black and brown students do not have the same experience of police presence/contact as white students. Police in schools do not make them feel safer; on the contrary, their lived experience with law enforcement makes that presence feel like a direct threat to their safety. At best, an unnecessary distraction to learning--at worst, a dangerous incident waiting to happen.
I’m a CA state licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and lived and worked in Oakland for over a decade. I’ve worked with students and teachers in Oakland public schools. Police presence in schools is a trauma trigger for our youth which increases behavioral problems rather than reducing them. Police presence in schools gives the message to our youth that they are seen as criminals and will be treated as such. Oakland students need access to mental health services, after school programs, learning tools, transformative justice training, employment opportunities, food, art classes, love, and leadership.

School Board Directors: I encourage you all to consider defunding the police force that has taken a expenditure of $6 million annually from the school budget. It is unjustifiable to consider a personal police force that has been used in recent times for personal protection of school board members because of public outcry. Who do the School Board Directors fear? Do they fear their constituents? The presence of a police force (that do not live in the community) only enforces the symbiotic gesture of incarceration in our neighborhoods and the facade of fear. I am not against the police officers, but I am against feeding the image of danger and fear in an already marginalized and disenfranchised community abandonment by the very notions of fear. It is the school district's duty to invoke pride and sense of safety in the community schools and board meetings. Please value your community and defund this wasteful image of fear and power.
I support the George Floyd Resolution for Police Free Schools. We need to invest in our students not the police. We need to fund our teachers, nurses, social workers, and counselors. We need to divest from policing our students. Young people should not have to fear police violence at school.
If you want to stop the school-to-prison pipeline, you need to wrap your arms around our kids with therapists, restorative justice experts, social workers, nurses and counselors -- not their hands with school police cuffs. Support the BOP proposal as it stands. (Teacher for 12 years at Fremont and two at Skyline, Oakland resident and voter)
As a student of color, I don’t agree with the idea that OSPD should even be an existing group in Oakland unified school districts. If you take the time to observe the reputation of police outside of school, as well as the racist and discriminative commonalities why would one wish that on a school environment. If anything, this action would only induce more commotion from students feeling threatened and unsafe. Which would, as a result take the attention away from their schoolwork and education and instead put it towards fear and stress on a daily basis. I would suggest investing money in other programs such as restorative justice or counseling. These investments aid in prevention of altercations and are less violent.

As a former Oakland resident, consultant, community organizer, and teacher, I support this action and will happy to see more money invested in social emotional learning, positive behavior interventions and support , and other much needed programs and services determined by the students and families.

Police in schools do nothing to uploft students and support their wellbeing at school. Our school district and city must redirect money from policing to community organizations and schools to increase supports that do uplift children like additional counselors, social workers and nurses. To develop further restorative practices as well.
I'm a pediatrician practicing at Kaiser Oakland. The majority of my patients live in Oakland and attend school in Oakland. I support defunding police. We must get police out of schools in Oakland and throughout our state. We need nurses, psychologists, social workers and teachers.
