I care less about screen time as a raw number and more about what the screens are designed to do to my kids’ attention. Curricula built on point systems, streaks, and badges aren’t teaching tools — they’re engagement loops borrowed from the apps we’re trying to get our kids off of. I strongly support evaluating curricula for that kind of addictive, game-like design before renewal.
I also support ending recreational device use at lunch and recess. Kids need stretches of the day that are unmediated — where boredom, conversation, and play aren’t being captured by a screen.
One ask: please pair this with real PD time, especially for elementary teachers, so the shift away from screen-heavy instruction isn’t an unfunded mandate. Thank you.
As an OUSD parent, I ask the Board to adopt this resolution. I can’t believe we have no choice & are required to send our kids to an institution where they exposed to so much screen time. These regulations should already be in place. I really hope you can support this and figure it out as soon as possible. I especially support ending recreational Chromebook use at lunch, recess, and classroom free time — those moments should be for play, conversation, and rest. This resolution doesn't remove technology from learning; it ensures devices are used purposefully and safely. Please vote yes.
As an OUSD parent, I strongly support this resolution and urge the Board to adopt it tonight.
Right now, we don’t have clear, evidence-based guidelines for how 1:1 devices should be used in our classrooms.
I appreciate that this resolution takes a thoughtful, balanced approach developing age-appropriate guidelines with teachers, limiting recreational device use during lunch and recess, and looking more closely at curricula that rely on game-like rewards and engagement loops that may capture students’ attention without actually deepening learning.
I’m also glad it protects access for students whose IEPs or 504 plans require devices.
My one request, to make this transition successful, is that we make sure teachers have the training and support before implementation in 2027-28. Moving away from screen-heavy instruction will take time, planning, and meaningful professional development, particularly for elementary educators and newer teachers.
