My child is about to start Kindergarten at an Oakland Elementary school and I think it is imperative that we have bell to bell phone free schools.
All the studies show how it decreases attention span and harms children. They are distractions and are not helpful.

Please approve this item to ban phones for K-12 campuses. There is no need for phones in school.

As a school social worker at various sites I see the harms done by cell phones on our campuses. Kids make bad decisions when they have access to cameras, internet, social media and texting, and we as adults need to ensure cell phones and smart devices are not creating an unsafe culture by banning them from bell to bell from k-12. They should be off and away, or confiscated if used at all, even during lunch or breaks, and also during on-site afterschool programs, where kids are also exposed to inappropriate online behavior with their phones. My own kids’ school had an issue this year with a 5th grader showing 2nd graders inappropriate content on his phone in afterschool. We don’t have enough supervision to ensure that won’t happen, so please just ban phones!

Cell phone use has been damaging at our school including causing a situation where 1st grade students were shown inappropriate adult content by 4th graders on their phone. There is no academic or safety justification for having functional phones at school.
