I am a parent at Joaquin Miller Elementary. Many of our classrooms get extremely hot (over 85 degrees on hot days) and kids report not being able to learn, feeling distracted by the heat, and uncomfortable. This resolution communicates that OUSD’s Board hears the community and takes this public health emergency seriously.
This resolution provides needed principles and accountability to guide this work, namely that OUSD needs to make progress broadly for ALL students, and not only at a small number of schools.
We applaud the Board’s adopted goal for “students return to meaningfully cooler classrooms in August 2026.”
