I am a parent with a student at Peralta Elementary. I am devastated to learn that we are going to lose our CSM and TSA, under cloak of darkness without input or feedback from the community, and without an opportunity to share how important these two incredible women are to the positive culture, safe and equitable learning environment, and emotional health of our students. Our CSM and TSA provide continuity to families and students, positive and joyful leadership, and a clarity of direction and values shared by the school community. As we navigate uncertainty in the years ahead, I have been heartened to know that Jennifer and Christina would be there to support our families and provide direction. To lose them at this critical time is an unfathomable loss and I implore the board to reconsider the value and necessity of these positions at every school.
I'm a teacher at Peralta and I learned that we are going to lose our TSA and our CSM. Both of these roles are vital to the functionality and success of all of our students. Christina Means, our CSM, and Jennifer Everhart, TSA, have spent years building relationships with our community, especially our most vulnerable students and their families. Cutting their positions without opportunity for community or staff input is a major equity issue for our students and teachers.
They are integral in our professional development, providing coaching and support to teachers, and countless services to our students. The work that our CSM and the TSA do behind the scenes at our school is what retains teachers at our site and keeps our school running.
We need to keep equity for all students, regardless of the school that they attend, in mind when cutting student facing positions. I believe that every student in OUSD deserves to attend a school with at least one CSM and one TSA.
I am a teacher at Peralta Elementary. I am writing to advocate for my school. Recently I learned that Peralta is going to lose our TSA and our CSM based on the One-Pager that was sent to our Principal without any of our community’s input or feedback. Both of these roles are vital to the functionality and success of all of our students. Many of our students have behavioral and learning needs that exceed the supports a general education teacher can provide. Our CSM and TSA support these students daily. They are also integral in planning our professional development & providing coaching and support to teachers to build our craft. Peralta has been a successful school because our staff are collaborative. Their work increases teacher retention at our site.

Peralta Elementary’s students and teachers benefit from the supports provided by our TSA and CSM. Academic performance will suffer, students’ social-emotional wellbeing will suffer and staff will be even more overwhelmed and overworked because we will be having to try and fill in the gaps that our TSA and CSM usually handle. Our TSA and CSM are integral to providing the quality programming that all children deserve.

Cutting their positions IS an EQUITY ISSUE. The CSM, TSA, and Principal work together to ensure students get the long term support they need. They are integral in covering teachers so that we can attend legally required meetings. Peralta has been successful because our staff are collaborative. The CSM and the TSA are a huge part of supporting this. Their work increases teacher retention at our site. I implore you to keep equity for all students, regardless of the school that they attend, in mind when cutting student facing positions. I believe every student in OUSD deserves to attend a school with at least 1CSM and 1TSA.

I urge the board to direct its bargaining team to offer a raise to employees and settle the contracts. Do not force teachers out on strike! Thank you.
