I understand that there is a proposal to cut funding for the TSA and CSM positions at Peralta Elementary for 2026-27. I understand that the district needs to make budget cuts, but these roles are critical to all schools and should not be cut from Peralta or anywhere else. These roles provide important support to teachers and students on behavioral matters, attendance, equity issues, teacher mentorship and coaching, among other things. They contribute to staff retention in classrooms because teachers feel supported, which in turn promotes enrollment and consistency for students and families. Now is not the tile to cut these critical positions, when so many other cuts will make it harder to be a classroom teacher. The district should focus cuts on central office costs so that schools can continue to do the important work of teaching and caring for children and families every day.
