School Board Directors and Facilities staff, please address overheating in the 2100 classrooms without forced air before the start of the next school year. During heat waves, my 4 yr-old TK student had nose bleeds every other day at Laurel Elementary. At cooltheschools.org we have collected similar stories of health hazards and behavior problems across the district. It would take only ~$6M to reduce the temperature in ALL overheated classrooms across the district, and this would uplift enrollment, attendance, achievement, and teacher retention. A 2024 Harvard study showed that student cognitive performance increase on average 20% when temperatures cool from 86 to 68 degrees. Our kids can't wait for new grants and you have the data you need -- please use existing Measure Y funds to cool the schools NOW for a huge equity win.
