I am a teacher at Bella Vista Elementary School and my classroom faces south. In the afternoon, the hottest part of the day, the sun shines directly into my classroom. If it is 85F outside, my classroom is 10F+ hotter. There is no circulation besides two stand up fans that I place diagonally across from each other in a classroom that is about 1000 sq. ft. In order to mitigate the heat in the room, I close the shades and open all of the top windows, but there is no air circulation. When I go out into the hallway outside the classroom, it is about 5 to 8F cooler. This is not an environment conducive to learning. If there is a heat wave of 90F or more, the classroom will spike up to 100F or more. I wear an ice band around my neck to stay cool and must leave the classroom right after school because I cannot keep working in the heat. I do not know of any other job where young children and I must endure the heat let alone teach and learn i it. It is inhumane.
