Hello! I echo the questions asked by the others in the Sequoia community calling for more transparency about how Measure Y dollars are being allocated to improve the unsafe realities students and teachers experience on a daily basis. Previously, we were told this meeting would contain an update on the Sustainability Policy and its implementation, especially as it relates to guiding Measure Y projects. As that is no longer on the agenda for this meeting, when and how can we receive updates on this matter?
Additionally, in August the note was taken that a timeline with dates would be shared for the Facilities Master Plan creation and communication. When can we expect to see that timeline and where should we go for updates?
We look forward to partnering with you to work together to achieve the goals stated in each of these guideposts.
The Cool the School volunteer work completed by caregivers at Sequoia Elementary since August 2025 has drawn lessons from the Thermal Comfort pilot study the district conducted at Manzanita, Laurel, and West Oakland Middle in 2023. We are heartened to see the impact that basic and passive mitigation efforts (like roof insulation, night flush of air out of windows, replacement windows, ceiling fans, etc.) could improve comfort for 60-90% of school day hours at a much lower cost than HVAC retrofits.
Here are some data points that show our progress and we will update this committee with temp trends until we successfully reduce the temps in ALL spaces at Sequoia below the OSHA threshold.
Since the pilot was completed 2 years ago, has OUSD used the information in any way? How could we work with OUSD to continue to test out these learnings and share them with the 2100 other classrooms without forced air?
