L.-68 25-1472 Approval by the Board of Education of a Memorandum of Understanding By and Between District and Urban Montessori Charter School, Oakland, CA, transiting and continuing the Charter School's Classroom Instructional Program during the 2025-2026 School Year, pursuant to the terms and conditions stated herein, to District's Brookfield Elementary School (BES), with an evaluation to be conducted of the feasibility and appropriateness of continuing said programmatic offerings, as part of the BES instructional program, beyond the 2025-2026 School Year.
Introducing a public Montessori program like the one at UMCS to Brookfield will bring a student-centered approach to learning that supports diverse academic and developmental needs. This is especially important for neurodivergent students like my son, who often thrive in environments that support individualized pacing and hands-on learning. This is a pathway for more families to join OUSD and in the student population served.
My son has thrived at Urban Montessori. It is not only a wonderful community but through the amazing direction of its teachers and leadership, it helps children grow in their independence and academic ability. Brookfield offers a well maintained campus with robust services. Approving this MOU is a win/win for OUSD in bringing in dozens of families to OUSD and allowing Urban Montessori to continue building its community.
I wholeheartedly support this move into Brookfield elementary, not only for my son, but for the other kids that have lost their beloved school. It will help them have a more seamless transition into their next year of education, and will keep an affordable and accessible Montessori program alive in Oakland. I toured Brookfield Elementary and was very impressed by the staff and offerings that they have there and look forward to being a part of that community. Please vote yes!
Montessori should be something that is available to ALL CHILDREN, no matter socioeconomic status. It offers an opportunity for children to be hands on in their education instead of OUSD's "teaching to the STAR test" method. OUSD is losing funding and support because it's not listening to the parents and children they're supposed to be preparing for the future. Do the right thing and expand Montessori district wide, phase it in and make it apart of the current curriculum. You're doing our children a disservice with the antiquated systems of education.
I would like to voice my support for Urban Montessori to become part of OUSD at the Brookfield campus. My youngest child is driving in Urban Montessori‘s program whereas he does not thrive so well in traditional education the community at Urban Montessori is strong and though this will be some transition, I have faith that the program will continue to strengthen and become a Important part of OUSD educational opportunities
My name is Daniel Bissonnette and I am the Head of School at Urban Montessori Charter School. I have been working with OUSD staff and the Brookfield community for months on this MOU and am excited for our next steps. It has been such a pleasure to meet and work with Brookfield staff and families. All of our families have felt so welcomed when visiting Brookfield and are awaiting next steps to be able to enroll in a Montessori program there.
As a parent, I am also excited to bring my own child to the program as well. This is a great opportunity to bring a new program to OUSD that can attract more families to join this already amazing school!
This is an amazing opportunity to bring many new families into the Oakland Unified School District, including mine. We are so excited about this program for all of our kids, one of whom is neurodivergent and benefits immensely from the Montessori method. Please vote to support!
