D.-2 23-1122 A Presentation to the Charter Matters Committee by Director Charter School Office, or Designee, on site visit procedures for OUSD-authorized Charter Schools and trends from the 2022 - 2023 Spring Annual Site Visits.
My name is Maira Vaca and I am a parent to 2 Cox Academy students, I’m very passionate about my kids education. Cox has been my school of choice for the last 9 years, and it’s a place my kids and I called home. I will really appreciate counselor Valerie Bachelor to respond to my email and accept our invitation to talk about the struggles our school is facing. Prop 51 will help us to solve many of our issues and allow our kids a safe place to keep learning. Once again our school it’s open to ALL BOARD MEMBERS please, come and visit and see for yourselves the issues our community is facing.
I am one of parents of a brilliant 3rd grader at Cox Academy which is a charter school managed by EFC, but has OUSD as It’s landlord. Our school is located in District 7 (Deep East Oakland). Cox shares the campus with OUSD school Reach Academy.
We have consistently and openly reached out the board members of OUSD and expressed our concerns around the MAJOR leaks in the boiler room that sits next to the main electrical breaker, the holes in the roof of the portable classrooms that allow rain to leak into the buckets, the shared playground that’s not up to par b/c there are screws and padding missing.
2 board members have been responsive and supportive. On the far end of that, one mocked a parent as she made public comment at the last public meeting. WE ARE CALLING OUT AND CALLING ON ALL BOARD MEMBERS TO VISIT COX ACADEMY AND APPROVE THE $28M BEING HELD UP BY A SIGNATURE. The money has already been approved for Cox. It’s not charters vs. district. ITS EQUAL EDUCATION FOR ALL.
I am a parent of a 3rd grader at Cox Academy, a charter school managed by EFC that is located in District 7 (Deep East Oakland). Cox shares the campus with OUSD school Reach Academy. Charter School visits should be done more frequent especially when the OUSD is the Landlord over the facilities that a Charter school occupies. Cox Academy has had the same buildings and bathrooms since the School opened in 1980 most of which are in need of significant repair. Cox has been awarded 28 million dollars from the state through Prop 51 to use for facilities upgrades an improvements including a new playground for both Cox Academy and Reach Academy to use. OUSD is the only one that can approve the funds be given to Cox by providing a MOU for facilities use and a long term lease. These items have to be voted on by the OUSD Board. We have requested several board members come visit the campus and speak to the parents (2 members have come) WE ARE CALLING ON other members to respond and VISIT!
