T.-36 23-0834 Approval by the Board of Education of a Services Agreement 2022-2023 - No Cost by and between District and Vision To Learn, Los Angeles, CA, for the latter to provide vision services on the premises of selected OUSD K-12 school sites, on days and at times mutually agreed upon by both Parties, as delineated in Exhibit A of the Agreement, via the Health Services Department, for the period of October 1, 2022 through June 30, 2024, at no cost to the District.
Dear Members of the Board,
Please support this contract with Vision to Learn to provide vision services to the students of OUSD. Our staff and volunteers at Burckhalter have noticed many students showing signs and symptoms of vision challenges, including eye rubbing, squinting, and fatigue with reading. Many families don't have access to the proper assessment or intervention for these issues. We cannot expect our students to thrive and succeed when they cannot focus on what is in front of them. Experts from the American Association of Opthamology and Strabismus, Stanford Health and the CDC all recommend early assessment and intervention for health and educational success. Providing these services to all students will be an equitable step in improving chances of success in their school environments. Our students cannot learn what they cannot focus on. Please approve this contract to provide vision services to the students of OUSD.
I was a School SocialWorker/Counselor in OUSD for 30 years. I am now retired and am a volunteer reading tutor with Children Rising, a wonderful nonprofit agency which provides at-site free tutoring to elementary students who are at least one year reading level behind by the second or third grade.
The principal at the school where I tutor requested that I help get a number of children’s vision assessed as there was no one else in the district to do it. I made at least 40 calls to parents whose children told their teacher they might need glasses. Very few, if any, have followed through with getting their child glasses.
We need a vision program at school sites so that our students can get the glasses they need. I beg you to support the contract to get Vision to Learn in OUSD. How can we expect to have our children learn if a number of them can’t even see the blackboard? Thank you.
I am a volunteer reading tutor at Burckhalter Elementary. The need for vision care is something I witness daily. We have been working since the start of the school year to secure eye exams and glasses but the transportation and financial hurdles are very daunting. I had one student ask me for glasses as a birthday gift. Please approve this contract so we can get eye care for our students; wee are eager to get Vision to Learn onsite as soon as possible.
