G.-1 23-0030 Discussion and possible adoption by the Measure G1- District Teacher Retention and Middle School Improvement Act Oversight Commission of the allocation of $1,070,435.36 (of the $6,422,612.14) dollar surplus, each, in Fiscal Years 2023-24 and 2024-24 based on the $131.84 per pupil allocation formula adopted in Fiscal Year 2022 (File No: 22-0080 Enactment No: 22-0549).
Dear Oversight Board: I am a tutor since 2021 at Garfield Elementary between San Antonio and Fruitvale neighborhoods. I have been discussing a field trip to Chabot Space and Science center with my teacher to enrich the students' learning. She informs me that the school has no money allocated for field trips and that volunteers or parents typically fundraise for these on their own. OUSD does not even provide free transportation for field trips! I find this very disappointing, considering the amount of tax dollars we all are paying to support the district. I noted that the allocation of Measure G1 funds seems piecemeal - each school needs to apply for money on its own. This detracts educators from their jobs of educating children. Instead why is a pot of money not set aside so that when a school wants to conduct a field trip, they can apply at any time during the year and be sponsored by the district?
