AB1912 became California state law on Sept 6th. It was authored by 2 east bay representatives Mia Bonta & Buffy Wicks who clearly are listening to the popular options of their constituents. This new law will prevent any community in the state of California going through in future, what we the families in OUSD, whose schools were slated for closure, have gone through and are going through. In future, a proper engagement with the district community will have to happen and a detailed equity analysis in many different aspects as described in the bill. Not the process forced on us in OUSD with a public announcement to close an ad hoc list of schools and a vote within two weeks and even an ad hoc reduction in the list within that short period. I respectfully implore this board in the spirit of AB1912 to give us the community in OUSD the respect of a proper engagement as other communities in a similar situation will now get in future. I oppose these rushed school closures in OUSD.
I'm writing in opposition of the school closures and to stand is solidarity with the thousands of families, students, teachers and staff who are being traumatically impacted. We made the difficult decision to move our family to District 4 recently because we wanted our daughter to attend K-8th at Hillcrest - that is being taken away with almost no planning on how it will affect the students there. Sam Davis, you went door to door in my neighborhood and told me to my face that opposed school closures. I feel lied to and disheartened. Please reconsider your votes.
Please address the temperatures in our classrooms at Skyline. Last week I had to endure 4 days teaching with the thermostat at 96, 98, and 99 degrees in room 56. It was impossible to teach and learn. My students had headaches, felt sick, dehydrated, and we rtried to hold class outside, but a student was stung by a hornet. As a weorker, these were unsafe conditions for me. I felt like I was going to faint, had heart palpitations, and had difficulty moving my muscles due to the exposure to these extreme conditions. Please do whatever it takes to address the inequitable facilities on our campus. If nothing is done, someone could die from heat exhaustion, dehydration, or heat stroke. Stop neglecting and abusing the physicalk and emotional health of workers and students. Give students adequate facilities so that they can focus on learning.
