Please sign the above petition to terminate Mr Donnie Barclift, a known child abuser, from OUSD and call to action investigate the Ombudsperson, Mr Valenzuela, who covered up and ignored Mr Barclift's hate crime videos.
Mr Barclift severely flogged with a lumber beam two 11,12 year old boys in the '80's in San Diego County. Then sought employment at any school district near the Bay Area, attempting Sacramento first, when one of his victims became employed as a teacher in 2000 after moving to the Bay Area. The other victim was not so lucky and died from a self-inflicted overdose the same year Mr Barclift was hired by OUSD in 2009. Prior to this, Mr Barclift had zero interest or experience in education, and zero college education proving it. Therefore, Mr Barclift is unfit to work at public schools. Mr Valenzuela alerted Mr Barclift to remove the incriminating videos, misleading the public.
I am writing to oppose the closure of schools within OUSD. The school closure plan was not thought out and vetted appropriately, will not alleviate the district's financial issues, and will cause significant disruption and long-lasting negative impacts to the students within OUSD. In particular, the closure of the two successful, high performing middle schools is a mistake and will lead to a loss of funds to the district as students leave for private, charter or out-of-district schools.
I am writing in opposition to the planned closure of OUSD schools. School closures are disruptive and lead to declines in student academic performance and declines in enrollment. Closing schools will not alleviate the district's financial challenges. Closing schools will result in a loss of revenue for the district due to attrition and enrollment loss, and it is so disruptive to our communities. Students are moving from public schools into charter schools or private schools, and there is no strategic solution to increasing enrollment in the public schools, solving the problem at its root cause. There is no evidence of significant savings from previous school closures in Oakland over the last 20 years. OUSD needs to develop a plan to address enrollment loss, improve academic success, and strengthen schools. Our students and teachers deserve better.
I'm opposed to the planned closure of OUSD schools. School closures are disruptive and often lead to declines in student academic performance instead of improvements. Closing schools will not alleviate the district's financial challenges. Closed empty school buildings do not save the district money as a closed school takes time and money to repurpose and will still require significant maintenance and care. In fact, closing school will most likely result in a loss of revenue for the district due to attrition and enrollment loss. Students are moving from public schools into charter schools and there is no strategic solution to increasing enrollment in the public schools, solving the problem at its root cause. There is no evidence of significant savings from previous school closures in Oakland over the last 20 years. I am opposed to OUSD's recent actions to fire two educators (including 32-year veteran Oakland educator Craig Gordon) in retaliation for their participation in the fight against school closures. Firing teachers who have been involved in the Parker Liberation and broader movement against school closures is in direct violation of the letter issued by Chief Governance Officer, Joshua R. Daniels, to Moses Omolade and Maurice Andre San-Chez dated February 11, 2022: "...This letter is to confirm that OUSD will not retaliate against any OUSD employee involved in protesting school closures (including anyone involved in the hunger strike) or supporting those who are involved in such protests (including anyone supportive of the hunger strike".
We demand that OUSD stop retaliating against educators for their involvement against school closures, and reverse their terminations immediately.
I write to oppose the school closures approved earlier this year. 1) Closing these schools, particularly the middle schools, will not alleviate the district's alleged financial challenges. The attrition from students moving from elementary to middle school in OUSD is higher than the consultants assume in their analysis, and the K-8 schools retain students at a much higher rate. Plus the lost revenue from those departed students in their high school years is also not factored in. 2) The "process" for exploring what closures might have to happen and the impact on the communities - basically non-existent, offensive to parents. Should be 1 year or more to develop a list, plan, etc. 3) The welcoming schools aren't ready, don't have space - many are sharing space with charter schools already! 4) No environmental impact assessment on the closure plan was done - this is an illegal plan on top of everything else.
My name is Sanyika Bryant and I am writing to stand in solidarity with the Parker Occupation and let the district know that we are completely against their backdoor decision to hire private security that was allowed to harm innocent people who were defending their human right to education. Allowing private security to harm Oakland families is NO different than allowing police to harm Oakland families and students in our schools. The brutality inflicted on community members at Parker last week is a violation of the George Floyd Resolution and the work to create Black Sanctuary in Oakland.
To continue your racist practices of closing majority Black schools AND then brutalizing the same Black and Brown families that are defending their schools is despicable and we will continue to fight against you and make sure you lose your seats.
