My name is Nancy Phan, an Oakland native, who currently lives in district 6. I am the Regional Program Coordinator for Youth Together.
At Youth Together, we believe that young leaders and their voices are exactly what we need to create peace, unity and justice in school and in our community as a whole.
As a product of the OUSD school system myself and a youth advocate to Oakland youth since 2012, I believe that The Oakland Youth Vote is very important. Young leaders should be empowered by knowing that they have the power to elect board members who represent their values. OUSD, right now, have the opportunity to set an example as a pioneer by implementing voter engagement programming to high school students and taking the first step in being a District committed to civic engagement. VOTE YES ON THE YOUTH VOTER ENGAGEMENT RESOLUTION AND SUPPORT YOUNG VOTERS IN OAKLAND.
Good evening! My name is Kimberly Woo, and I am the Student Trainee for the Oakland Youth Commission, which is the city body composed of youth who leads city campaigns on youth empowerment. I am in strong support of this Youth Engagement Resolution, which would ensure that eligible 16-and-17-year-olds have access to pre-registration and voter education opportunities to enact the goals of Measure QQ. We as a community must empower our youth who represent our leaders of tomorrow and, most importantly, today. From mental health resources to career readiness in schools, youth are the most qualified experts to speak on policies that directly affect them, and we must provide them with the tools and education to civically participate. The youth in Oakland are the constituents of OUSD, and this education belongs to the students. I urge the OUSD to prioritize youth registration and civic education in order to inspire our youth to voice their passions and advocate for our communities.
As a person who used to be responsible for history/social science curriculum in OUSD, I strongly support this resolution. When I worked in the district there was no structure for ongoing voter registration or education. This was done sporadically, and went teacher to teacher. This is still the case. The district should remedy this situation, and build ongoing structures to support civic engagement. Our students deserve no less.
Thank you.
Please support implementation of QQ Youth Vote. With the right to vote, students will become educated on the issues that concern them; it will also establish a practice of voting when they become eligible to vote in other local and national elections. Through their involvement, their families will also be more involved in voting and election issues. This will benefit the community. Please ensure that QQ can be implemented and lead the way to better civic responsibility for youth an their families.
Support implementation of QQ, Youth Vote. Please lead the way to a stronger democracy and civic engagement of our brilliant students. The students of OUSD created Measure QQ in partnership with City Council members, they educated voters and City Council. Their efforts garnered unanimous City Council approval & an amazing 67% of your constituents AGREED by voting themselves. Our Oakland youth brought these voters together. When the 16 and 17 year olds vote for School Board, they will educate themselves (an incredible amount of work has already been done by the students, listening to and recording the needs of each school community.) Our Oakland students will engage their parents as voters. The work of the Board will be better understood by the community. The Board will become relevant to the needs of our students and productive in creating & strengthening a rigorous & respected, equitable school district which provides equal access and equal protection to all its students and families.
It's time that students of OUSD aged 16-18 to have a voice in selecting board members. They are impacted by the Board's decisions and they should have a say in the matter.
