My husband and I oppose this resolution for the reasons given in a letter we emailed to the board members. Our letter should be part of the public record.

I'm opposed to a paid sabbatical at a moment when OUSD is planning significant changes to the District by closing and consolidating many schools. If the superintendent needs to take a leave of absence at this moment it should be unpaid. And the planned OUSD school closures/consolidations should be delayed so that the OUSD can make such important decisions with its' organizational leadership fully engaged and involved. Completing the planned school closures and consolidations with the superintendent on a sabbatical will fail.

I don't believe this the right time for a sabbatical.

I oppose a paid sabbatical for the superintendent position at this time. I do not oppose a sabbatical per se, as we all deserve time to rest and recuperate. But, to take a paid sabbatical and incur extra expenses at at time when students and families are being told that their schools must close for financial reasons feels upsetting and contradictory. Please find a way to support the superintendent's well-being without taking away from the finances of the district or the well-being of the larger community.

I am strongly against any kind of paid sabbatical for the superintendent for 3 month beginning August 22 and appointment of Dr Sandra Aguilera as interim superintendent during this time and costing the district at least $31,000 as per Dr. Yee's proposal. This is the most egregious of all asks considering the district, which is closing schools siting financial reasons, can afford to spend this additional salary on already one of the highest superintendent salaries in the country, let alone the state. Additionally, taking a sabbatical to recover from leading during a pandemic is rich reasoning, considering you are closing schools and further traumatizing families and students within the district.
