22-1288A Adoption by the Board of Education of Resolution No. 2122-0093 - Determining Preliminary Eligibility of Each Applicant for Provisional Appointment to the Board of Education Member Vacancy in District 6 and Selecting Interviewees.
I aak the OUSD Board to function wjfh full fairness and transparency to the District 6 Vacancy Appointment process given that this is an elected position. I urge the Board to consider parents and long term residents from district Azlinah Tambu, Kimberly Davis, and David Velasquez.
In reviewing the applications for the D6 vacancy, I strongly urge the board to advance candidates who will truly represent the residents of District 6. The Board has an opportunity to appoint someone who is a longtime resident not only of Oakland but of District 6 - and, most importantly, someone who is a parent of children in OUSD schools. The public has spoken. We are not supporting candidates backed by the political establishment or those merely looking to advance their political careers. Please advance the applications of Azlinah Tambu, Kimberly Davis, and David (Joel) Velasquez to make sure that a parent and long-time D6 resident is ultimately chosen to represent this seat.
I would like to put in a good word for Joel Velasquez to be the interim OUSD Board member for District 6. He has shown himself to have the needed temperament, to be clear thinking and respectful of other views while at the same time decisive on recent school issues in Oakland. He is also a fellow parent who has spent years volunteering in one school or another. His work has allowed him to develop skills that would compliment the other board members. The fact that he wants to run for this seat in November is a plus in my book. We need someone in district 6 who strongly wants the responsibility of a school trustee.
I urge the OUSD Board to bring full fairness and transparency to the District 6 Vacancy Appointment process. The residents of District 6 are being denied the opportunity to select their own school board representative. Tonight, interviewees are being selected during a closed board meeting without community input, making the process even less open and democratic. I hope the board takes this opportunity to fill the District 6 vacancy with someone who will advocate for all OUSD stakeholders in D6, and who will start making the board accountable to the public once again.

We need a long-time parent from D6 to be appointed. Let the parents of the community have a seat on the board!
