there's a desperate need for students w/disabilities be allowed to take advantage of all services that general ed students participate in. This will greatly strengthen their ability to socialize & to hopefully gain a better understanding from the general ed population. So much lack of understanding to them, has resulted in our most vulnerable (black students w/IEP's) having the highest rate of suspensions.
Not only is their a need for inclusion, but a need for ongoing behavior supports, specially trained staff, & an overall district wide practice of inclusive activities. Doing so will strengthen social skills, while also gaining a better understanding from the general ed population. I'm a CAC member & have a real fear as my son (who's autistic ) is in middle school (learning online) & I fear he'll be less capable of integrating w/general students. As I stated early, I hope OUSD will put forth the resources to help with ongoing supports for our most vulnerable students.
