21-1636 A discussion, and possible adoption by the Charters Committee of a recommendation to the Board of Education, of an Amended Board Policy - BP 0420.4 - Philosophy, Goals and Objectives - Charter Schools.
Tonight the board committee is considering language to amend the board bylaws for this committee. The proposed language, which has already been rejected by two committee members has been brought back to the table. Why? Board members know this is not responsible to have a board committee make recommendations on charter renewals, yet here we are again. Not only is this language not supported by the committee, these sweeping proposed changes have had almost no community engagement. I call on the board members to reject the proposed changes to the board bylaws about charter committee and to engage the community.
• I call on the board members to reject the proposed changes to the board bylaws related to the charter matters committee. The charter matters committee should be focused on partnering with charters to increase high quality public school options in Oakland for underserved kids. Let the staff do their job and continue to use their expertise to review, report out and make recommendations on charter related matters.
• I urge the board members to focus on aligning the charter office policies to AB1505. That should be our focus, not tasking committee members with reading charter petitions that are hundreds pages long and conducting hours of site visits. Let the Superintendent and her staff do their jobs and implement sound oversight policies and practices. Let's focus on collaborating in service of Oakland's underserved kids, not on compromising board members by having them do staff jobs.
