It is important for OUSD to be transparent about the funding. It is crucial to share with families what the specialist will be in charge of and how will their performance will be evaluated. We need to focus on how this money can truly impact the success students. I am also curious as to what languages the district will prioritize since the funds are not enough to represent the diverse community of Oakland.

After reviewing the presentation I have a few questions. I understand Title III funds are used to ascertain english learners from all language backgrounds reach english proficiency by any means. This can include using title three funds to provide extra academic services, hiring of support staff and increasing family engagement a researched method to drastically improve student achievement. However 810k of the 1.75 million title III funds are proposed to be spent on 7 Language Specialists. What are the responsibilities of a language specialist? What languages will be supported? How many language specialist currently serve the 80 OUSD public schools? What are the current reclassification rates? How will the hiring of language specialists yield higher proficiency rates? What is the family engagement plan? Theres a high need for language access as is will title III funds be used to mend this gap.
