The focus on planning, training and capacity building for school site leaders and multi-stakeholder teams to be able to hold this work collectively in an ongoing and sustainable way is critical to realizing a culture of racially just and relationship-centered schools where every student, staff and family feels supported. It must not be an afterthought but has to be resourced and baked into the plan. The Mental Health resolution specifically calls for creating “intentional healing and restorative spaces to address student, family, and staff trauma and allow small and large group opportunities to process, cope, and dialogue before and during the transition of returning to school, starting with opportunities for student, family, and staff retreats in the Summer of 2021.” Such work is foundational to building strong school teams and should be incorporated as part of a restorative restart to the school year.
