I writing in support of keeping Bunche on the WOMS campus through 2023-24 as written in the resolution being brought forth today. However, I am in opposition to the rumored merging of continuation schools across Oakland. Students who attend alternative schools do so for various reasons, more specifically because mainstream school has not worked for them. Bunche, Dewey, Sojourner Truth, Rudsdale, what makes these schools WORK is that they are small and have autonomy. Merging these schools together would be a mistake and would be counter productive to the intention behind creating small communities. For example, Bunche has the highest rate of seniors graduating with enough credits of any other alternative school. They have already experienced moving campuses multiple times, and to merge them or move them again would be a detriment to the students. Moving these students to McClymonds after 2024 would defeat the purpose of a small school away from the mainstream high school.
